Domino’s new chatbot lets you order pizza with Facebook Messenger

Popular restaurant chain Domino’s Pizza has announced that it now has a new way for you to order pizza thanks to a new Facebook Messenger chatbot named “Dom.” According to Domino’s, the chatbot will allow users to quickly place an order simply by sending a message through Messenger.

Chatbots are becoming increasingly popular across a wide range of industries, and they are often used to automate simple customer service tasks like resetting a password, scheduling maintenance appointments, and so on. In many cases, customers are never aware that the person they are chatting with is actually an AI.

While Domino’s is touting its chatbot as an exciting and convenient new way to order pizza, the AI does not appear to be particularly smart compared to some of the more impressive chatbots. You will not be able to talk to the bot about your order or make any special requests through it. In fact, Dom does not seem to understand anything besides the word “pizza.”

According to Domino’s, in order to use Dom, users must first register for an Easy Order account, where they must manually select what sort of pizza and toppings they want whenever they make an order. After setting up Easy Order and pairing it with Facebook, users can then message Dom with the word “pizza” and the bot will put in an order for their pre-selected meal.

“We’re delighted to allow our customers to order direct from Messenger – with 1B monthly active people using Messenger each month – it’s the obvious choice for Domino’s,” Nick Dutch, Head of Digital at Domino’s, said in a statement.

“We want to make ordering our freshly handmade pizza as easy as possible so we’re always on the look-out for new ways in which we can do this. Just message pizza – or send an emoji.  It really couldn’t be easier. What’s next? That’d be telling. Pizza on the moon perhaps…  Now that would be something!”

Dom will initially be available in the United Kingdom and Ireland only, and there is no word yet on when the feature might roll out elsewhere.
