Augmented and virtual reality will dominate at CES – here’s what’s coming

The Consumer Electronics Show, which starts on Jan. 5 in Las Vegas, will feature the biggest augmented reality and virtual reality showcase in history, according to the Consumer Technology Association.

The Gaming & Virtual Reality Marketplace at CES 2017 will have a nearly 50 percent increase in exhibitors from 2016, with more than 70 companies showcasing its latest augmented reality and virtual reality innovations. CES will also have a marketplace specifically for AR.

When the initial VR headsets were announced, they were incredibly expensive, but as mobile VR entertainment becomes more popular and headset prices drop, VR is predicted to perform strongly in 2017.

Here’s a look at the various VR and AR technologies we can expect from CES next week, as well as gaming laptops, monitors and more:

VR at CES

Next-generation HTC Vive headset: unlikely

Rumors have been making the rounds for months that HTC Corp. would unveil its next generation Vive headset at CES next week, together with rumors suggesting it would be wireless and have twin 4K displays.

HTC, however, has refuted the unveiling of the Vive 2 at CES and stated “There is no truth to the rumor of launching Vive 2 at CES 2017,” HTC told UploadVR. “At Vive, we are laser focused on building out a strong and growing ecosystem for current and future Vive owners so they can experience the best room-scale VR with the most compelling content available.”

Another big VR name missing from the CES lineup is Facebook Inc.-owned Oculus VR. Facebook will be at CES, but Oculus who had a large booth at CES 2016, is missing from this year’s lineup.

Finch unveils Mobile VR Kit

The Mobile VR Kit comprises of a pair of joysticks that works together with upper armband sensors that helps track and visualize hand and finger movement in VR, without the need for cables or cameras.

The company says the Shift will be compatible with smartphone VR systems like Google Cardboard and Samsung Gear VR, as well as HTC Vive, Oculus and OSVR headsets. The Shift also makes it possible to run existing Steam VR, Oсulus and HTC Vive apps and games on smartphone VR headsets.

Your Power Ranger dreams come true at CES

If you ever dreamt of being a Power Ranger when you were growing up, or perhaps more recently, you will be able to fulfill your dream, sort of, at CES next week.

If you are attending the event in Las Vegas, you can take advantage of Qualcomm Inc.’s Power Rangers VR experience, in partnership with Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. (known as Lionsgate).

The VR experience will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, set to be launched at CES, and is based on the Lionsgate Power Ranger feature film adaptation due out in March 2017. Visitors to the VR experience will be able to enter the zords of their favorite Power Ranger and will be able to exhibit its powers and capabilities in VR.

AR at CES

Asus ZenFone AR

Rumors suggest that AsusTek Computer Inc. will unveil its Zenfone AR, the second Google Tango smartphone that will come with a specialized augmented reality camera, at CES.

“The ZenFone AR will come with advanced functionality and performance at a competitive price,” Jerry Shen, chief executive officer of Asus told DigiTimes.

Nvidia

GTX 1050 notebooks

According to unnamed sources, new gaming laptops with Nvidia Corp.’s GeForce GTX 1050 graphics chip are set to be unveiled at CES 2017. The unveiling will coincide with Intel Corp.’s upcoming Kaby Lake seventh-generation “H” processors.

Manufacturers, such as Asus, Gigabyte, MSI and Lenovo are rumored to reveal notebooks based on the GTX 1050 and Kaby Lake-H processors in a few weeks.

Dell Inc. accidentally posted its upcoming laptop for PC gamers ahead of its reveal at CES. According to the specifications, the Dell XPS 9650 will come equipped with the GeForce GTX 1050 graphics chip.

The GTX 1050 won’t be compatible with the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive headset, but should be compatible with Microsoft Corp.’s Windows 10 VR headsets due out in 2017.

New version of Shield Android TV

The latest rumors suggest Nvidia will unveil two new Shield TV Android boxes, a gaming and media player, at CES next week. Precise details are unknown at this stage, but leaked images suggest two different sized models as well as a revised control pad.
