SAP Hana Cloud Platform evolves into SAP Cloud Platform with enhanced tools

SAP SE has had a strong product in its Hana Cloud Platform, but in the past year it has undergone a name change. SAP Hana Cloud Platform is now known simply as the SAP Cloud Platform. So why the name change?

The name change was done in order to reflect the evolution of the Hana cloud platform product, according to Emily Mui, senior director of cloud product marketing at SAP. The Hana name in cloud platform of today has evolved and has many more capabilities than it did in the past, so SAP thought a name change was in order to better reflect the overall product, she explained.

“We have so many more capabilities than we did about three years ago, and a lot of it is customer-driven and demand-driven and market-driven, so it’s not just about Hana in the cloud platform,” Mui stated. “And so the name change really helps reflect the product and the evolution of this platform as a service that is now known as SAP Cloud Platform.”

Mui spoke with John Furrier (@furrier), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile live streaming studio, live from SiliconANGLE’s Palo Alto studio to discuss this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, as well as the evolution of their cloud platform across their company into the SAP Cloud Platform and what is happening in that market in regards to how and why customers are utilizing it. Wooing traditional business

There have been many early adopters of the SAP Cloud Platform, but many traditional brick-and-mortar businesses are just now seeing how the platform can help their bottom line and are therefore showing interest in it, Mui said.

She gave the example of the mid-sized company Mapal Dr. Kress KG, a German precision tool manufacturer. It has adopted the SAP Cloud Platform fairly recently and is already seeing the benefits.

“They’re trying to connect their suppliers, their customers together, and then be able to track what’s happening with the tools that they’re manufacturing,” said Mui. “And so they’re using SAP Cloud Platform, creating the application, and then being able to track what’s happening, and then providing visibility to their customers, to everyone on the plant floor, to their suppliers, so they’re connecting everyone together.”

That said, there are many customers still trying to figure out what the cloud can do for them, and how it can help their business. They have their own in-house development, customer apps, legacy systems as well as some SAP applications, and with so much going on, the need to integrate is becoming critical, Mui pointed out.

“We see a lot of customers trying to connect,” said Mui. “They’re trying to figure out how to get to the cloud, and no one is immediately jumping to it. So they’ve got different applications they’re trying to build out, but in order to do that they have to connect their back end.”

To facilitate integration of so many areas, SAP offers complete integration services to the vendor to help them get integrated and connected, and from there to support their customers in any areas they need assistance with.

“Integration is one of the key services we provide,” explained Mui. “APIs, integration, we’ve also invested in micro-services technology. SAP is heavily looking into that and seeing how we can help those companies out there who want to leverage that type of technology.”
