Veeam rides always-on wave into the hybrid cloud

When it comes to managing data, enterprises are increasingly looking for more options, where applications can be accessible at any time and any place. Sensing the growing demand for this “always-on” platform, Veeam has focused its business model on delivering solutions for the multi-cloud future. And that focus is beginning to pay off for Veeam in a major way, according to Peter McKay (pictured), co-chief executive officer of Veeam Software Inc.

At the close of 2016, the company reported nearly 80 percent growth across its cloud business and 48 percent growth in enterprise customers. “Now it’s about recovery, it’s about all your apps, your data and services to be available 24/7/365,” McKay said. “It’s become mission critical to what we do.”

McKay stopped by theCUBE, SiliconANGLE’s mobile live-streaming studio, and answered questions from hosts John Furrier(@furrier) and Dave Vellante (@dvellante) during HPE Discover in Las Vegas, Nevada. They discussed his company’s expanding relationship with Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. and Veeam’s partnerships for service delivery in the hybrid cloud. (*Disclosure below.)

Veeam has built its business on the delivery of virtualization management software for VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V environments. One of the keys to the company’s success has been its role in backup and recovery services, McKay explained. This area continues to grow in importance as system outages, such as the one that affected British Airways in May, can have a major business impact.

“One guy pulls a plug, and the next thing you know it’s a hundred million dollars,” McKay said.

Getting closer to VMware and AWS?

Veeam’s products include a cloud-native, agentless backup for Amazon Web Services (AWS), which is paving the way for enterprises to move toward a hybrid cloud environment, McKay stated. The company’s network of partnerships has become a key part of its strategy.

“We’re extremely close and tight to VMware and moving closer to Amazon,” McKay said.

Late last year, Veeam joined HPE’s Complete Program, which added the company’s solutions portfolio to HPE’s price list for customers. “That’s been a win for HPE, because they focus on a data protection solution,” McKay said.

He also commented on his impressions of the Discover event: “What I see is HPE more focused. It’s a tighter message.”
