Exploring Hitachi’s global, long-term goals for IoT analytics at PentahoWorld

How is Pentaho’s data-ingesting platform pushing parent company Hitachi Ltd.’s long-term goals for business intelligence at the edge, where the “internet of things” resides?

Looking to answer this question and others, SiliconANGLE is at PentahoWorld 2017, currently underway in Orlando, Florida, with exclusive commentary and interviews from our roving news desk, theCUBE. (* Disclosure below.)

Acquired by Hitachi in 2015 and rebranded Hitachi Vantara, business intelligence software company Pentaho Corp. is “a fundamental part of Hitachi’s overall strategy,” according to Dave Vellante, co-founder and chief analyst at Wikibon Research (Wikibon is owned by the same parent company as SiliconANGLE).

“As an industrial giant, Hitachi thinks long term. Its U.S. data systems division has been a big storage provider, but this business is declining. Instead of competing with Dell EMC and Amazon in the storage market, they’re going for the ultimate win in IoT and analytics,” Vellante said. “Their storage efforts are being re-branded, bringing analytics to the edge of the network where [the internet of things] lives.”

Following the formation of Hitachi Vantara, the company announced its partnership with British Telecommunications PLC to develop enterprise and industrial-based internet of things products. “Companies are transforming into new business models and doing things significantly different to grow into the future. [The internet of things] is an enabler of that,” said Chuck Yarbrough, vice president of solutions marketing and management at Pentaho.

Keynote speakers at PentahoWorld 2017 include Hitachi Vantara executives Mark Hall, senior data mining consultant; Matt Casters, data integration architect; Donna Prlich, chief product officer; Anthony de Shazor, senior vice president of customer care; and Pedro Alves, senior vice president of community.

Other keynote speakers at the event include Tom Scurlock, director of worldwide alliances at MapR Technologies Inc.; Sachin Batra, senior management of information architecture at Universal Service Administrative Co.; Allaa Hilal, director of innovation at Intelligent Mechatronic Systems Inc.; Derek Mathieson, group leader of the administrative information systems group at CERN; and Henry Liebrenz, police sergeant for the German Federal Police.
