Watch live from AWS re:Invent 2017
Problem-solving at the value level, how will Amazon Web Services Inc. face rising competition? Its ecosystem now more important than ever, how will AWS drive more value in artificial intelligence, automation, migration and “internet of things” infrastructure?
Looking to answer this and other questions, SiliconANGLE is at the sixth annual AWS re:Invent, currently underway in Las Vegas, Nevada, with exclusive commentary and interviews from our roving news desk, theCUBE. (* Disclosure below.)
Despite rivals like Microsoft Corp., Google LLC and Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. growing faster, AWS continues to dominate the cloud infrastructure market. For its third-quarter results, Amazon.com Inc. reported AWS’ revenue rose 42 percent from a year ago to $4.58 billion.
When asked how people should view AWS’ growth compared to these faster-growing rivals, CEO Andy Jassy said during an exclusive interview with SiliconANGLE Media’s co-founder and co-CEO John Furrier, “We have just a much larger business in this infrastructure, technology, cloud space than anybody else. If you look at estimates from folks like Gartner, they estimate that we have several times the size business than the next 14 providers combined. So it’s a pretty significant leadership position.”
This year’s re:Invent is “going to be the first one where it’s truly a strong ecosystem story,” according to Peter Burris, chief research officer and analyst at Wikibon (owned by the same parent company as SiliconANGLE), during a CUBEConversation with Furrier. “It’s about how Amazon is providing services that the rest of the world is going to be able to consume and create new types of value through the Amazon ecosystem.”
AWS got its re:Invent conference off to a rapid start with its announcements Monday of the expansion of its AWS Elemental Media Services suite, designed to enable the end-to-end processing of video content, as well as the launch of its new Amazon Sumerian service, a platform for developers to create realistic virtual environments.
The company has also introduced the AWS Machine Learning Research Awards, which will fund academic machine learning research using its cloud. While personal finance company, Intuit Inc., announced it will use AWS as its standard machine learning and AI platform.
At the end of last year’s re:Invent, theCUBE and Wikibon teams termed the next period for the company as AWS 2.0. This year, the research team at Wikibon believes we will get a sneak peek at AWS 2.1, which will focus on three themes – one area being AI, ML and deep learning.
As part of the research, Burris writes “Our expectation is that three of the more exciting introductions will be ML for service management, which may be extended into a set of hybrid cloud capabilities; an AI workbench capable of supporting an entire AI-based application lifecycle; and specialty AI clouds for specific industries that are indicating a proclivity for AI adoption.”
Ahead of its re:Invent conference, AWS expanded its ML capabilities with the announcement last week of a new ML laboratory called the ML Solutions Lab, as well as image recognition services. This month also saw AWS announce it was backing the Open Neural Network Exchange project, an open-source tool that makes deep learning models more flexible.
