Israeli self-driving car startup Innoviz launches advanced LiDAR

Israeli startup Innoviz Technologies Inc. has commercially launched its first high-definition solid-state LiDAR product.

The company today said its InnovizPro delivers superior performance at a significantly lower cost and smaller size than existing solutions through a platform designed for next-generation autonomous driving programs. Claimed to leapfrog other LiDAR systems in accuracy and reliability even in challenging environments such as bright direct sunlight, the platform leverages a combination of proprietary software, microelectromechanical systems and detector designs.

The software powering the platform, Innoviz’s Micro Electro-Mechanical System and Detector designs, creates a dense 3D “point cloud” that enables object detection, classification and tracking at what is claimed to be longer distances than existing competitors. That is combined with what is described as an exceptionally high frame rate, high angular resolution and wide field of view, enabling it to detect and classify objects with high accuracy.

“We are addressing a major need to enable testing and development of autonomous vehicle technologies utilizing a far advanced LiDAR at a lower cost,” Innoviz co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Omer Keilaf said in a statement.

Coming into the launch, Innoviz Pro had raised $82 million in venture capital funding, with its most recent round of $73 million in two stages backed by auto parts suppliers Delphi Automotive and Magna International Inc. along with Samsung Group and SoftBank Group.

The company will demonstrate the technology at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas Jan. 9-12.
