The iPad is here and it’s a really big iPhone. Yeah, that’s right, John Furrier called it last month. We’re about halfway through the announcement right now, and Steve Jobs has spent most of his time during the keynote on the couch demonstrating a variety of apps from the App Store, which falls in line with exactly what John predicted as well.
We’ll have more analysis later today, I’m certain. For now, here’s the facts as given out at the event today.
– Apple sold our 250 millionth iPod last quarter.
– Last quarter alone they had 250 million visitors to their stores.
– App store: over 140,000 applications on the app store.
– Ended their holiday quarter $15 billion dollars in revenue.
– Apple also now has more than 140,000 applications available on its App Store. Up from the 100,000 revealed by the company in late 2009.
– Specs: 0.5 inches thin. 1.5 pounds.
– Thinner and lighter than any existing netbook.
– 9.7 inch IPS display.
– Full capacitive multitouch.
– Powered by Apple’s own custom silicon A4 chip processor (not the Intel chipset previously rumored).
– Does not support Adobe Flash.
– There’s a 30-pin Dock connector.
– Speaker, Mic, Bluetooth and 802.11 Wifi.
I’ll be adding more as we find out. Be sure to check back.
Update: Major League Baseball and the iBook Store are new. Looks like there is some sort of simulated game that will play on all MLB games, and there’s the introduction of the iBook Store, which “stands on the shoulders of the Kindle.”
Update: On connectivity – There are two plans. Of course there’s WiFi, but there will also be built in 3G services.
– $14.99 /month for 250 MB of data transfer.
– $29.99 /month for AT&T “unlimited” transfer.
– The device is technically unlocked, but by default it “works” with AT&T.
– No built in 4G coverage (so count out Verizon and Clear and thus count out reliable connections and usable speed).
The price of the device itself is $499. It’s being described by the MacBreak Weekly crowd as a “bombshell.”
Update: Here’s the complete iPad price Matrix:
