This month, 4 year-old Google Apps for Education marks a milestone in Google’s growth throughout the education, cloud-computing arena. Universities, colleges and alumni, as well as a great number of other educational establishments, now make up a list counting over 10 million people using the tools, further anchoring Google in this sector, and setting it up nicely for a future in Android’s mobile platform.
“According to the 2010 Campus Computing project, nearly 85% of four-year colleges and universities are already using or considering moving to the cloud by offering hosted email to their students,” writes Google. “Of those schools that have already made the move, more than 56% of them have gone Google.”
The numbers are encouraging, and according to this, they even show a healthy lead by Google, especially when summed up with every other G tool’s share of the market. The corporation, now found in every sector of technology ranging from mobile phones to video streaming, has been a pioneer in specialized cloud tech, and still holds the biggest piece of the pie-chart.
With the number of active Google Apps for Education users doubling itself since last fall, two million new users since May alone, and a growing expansion to the K-12 space, the cross-sector and ground-breaking search engine giant definitely found itself a brilliant new market to capture. This is something they’ve known from the get-go, as they’ve been targeting education sectors from very early on.
We’re sure to see more development for education-specific apps with the growth of Android. The mobile platform has been another way for Google to interface with users, making it a great way to push its apps. This past summer saw an increase in the number of education-related mobile apps available for the iPhone, iPad and Android, and we’re likely to see this increase in the next year for Android devices.
