T-Mobile USA arm is set to be the first company to sell Samsung Galaxy Tablet. The company intends to offer this iPad rival to subscribers in subsidized price, and under a wireless contract. Consequently, T-Mobile had another Android first, when HTC first launched the G1.
This move by T-Mobile is their answer to the stiff wireless competition going on. Currently, T-Mobile is seated at the number 4 position, behind giants like AT&T, Verizon Wireless and Sprint-Nextel Corporation. They needed this attention-grabbing gadget to be able to spark subscriptions and attract new customers.
T-Mobile USA will be selling units of Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy Tablet for the price of $399.99 under a 24-month holding period. This deal is very similar to what Sprint-Nextel Corp. will offer. Verizon Wireless will be a day behind T-Mobile USA in releasing Samsung Tablet in the market. With Verizon, each unit will have an unsubsidized (no contract) cost of $599.99. Four days after Verizon and five days after T-Mobile, Sprint-Nextel will follow. Frontrunner AT&T is also expected to join this feud, but has not reported any launch date yet.
When talking about supporting Samsung products, T-Mobile has been relentless in this pursuit. Recently, the company has featured Vibrant, one of the Galaxy S phones Samsung has produced exclusively for the U.S. market.
T-Mobile’s commitment and patronage to Samsung phones have been lucrative for both companies. The former has grounded its position in the high-end smartphone category and has slowly entering the tablet venture through Samsung Galaxy S line. Their strategy is more of selling phones rather than having customers sign up for contracts and agreements.
