Android Market Apps Exceed the 200K Mark, Gains on iTunes App Store

According to third party Android Market tracker AndroLib, the Android Market has surpassed the handsome figure of 200,000 apps. Two months ago an official tweet by Google stated the Android Market had 100,000 apps, which means the number of application has doubled during that period.

“Compared to Apple’s App Store, the Android Market is still some way off – the App Store is thought to have over 300,000 applications available for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. The App Store is somewhat older than the Android Market but there are a huge number of Android devices accessing Google’s app marketplace, AndroLib puts the number of Android apps downloaded at 2.5 billion.”

The Android Market is inching its way towards overcoming the App Store, and Google’s OS has seen growth even beyond this segment. This steady increase had recently passed the 300,000 activations per day mark, which we covered here. This figure is accompanied by increasingly sophisticated and multiplying malware attacks, aligned with the development and growing attention Android is getting. Further down the road, Android expansion’s is foreseen to accelerate by sources including IDC, with the prospective emergence of much cheaper Android devices, as low as $75.

Apple’s iPhone which currently holds a 28% share of the market is also experiencing growth. While that is limited due to its competitors’ increase in domain, Steve Jobs revealed official statistics regarding the OS back in September.
