Year 2011 is going to witness a lot of tablets, and the trend has already picked up at CES 2011. Just yesterday, Motorola and LG announced their 4G Android 3.0 tablets at the event. Xoom, Motorola’s long-awaited 10.1 inch tablet, will run on Verizon’s 4G LTE network and will have features like a dual-core 1 gigahertz processor, 1080p high-definition playback (with a HDMI output to display content on TVs), and front and rear-facing cameras at 2 MP and 5MP respectively.
LG announced its 4G tablet, th T-Mobile G-Slate. Although not much is known about this tablet, one fact is that it runs the tablet-friendly Android 3.0 OS and will be available in a few months.
Without missing a chance to compete, Research In Motion (RIM) has also joined hands with Sprint Nextel Corp. to play in the tablet computing domain. It is expected to launch a PlayBook tablet computer that will run on Sprint’s fast wireless 4G technology. This playbook will have a 7-inch screen and dual core chip but won’t be available until summer. However, the WiFi-only version will be released in the first quarter.
Among all this tablet news, Sprint’s been preparing its network for related CES announcements, as we heard a few things about an HTC smartphone. An AllThingsD article on Sprint’s HTC Evo Shift reads something like this;
“Just ahead of the start of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Sprint revealed the details on the HTC Evo Shift 4G and the Novatel MiFi 3G/4G portable hot spot. The announcement bulks up Sprint’s 4G lineup ahead of what is expected to be the announcement of several phones for Verizon’s new LTE-based 4G network.”
Finally, Microsoft made some big tablet announcements at CES 2011 too. Take a look at Ballmer’s CES 2011 Keynote, and be on the look out for our continuous coverage and commentary from the event.
