Verizon Strengthens Cloud Strategy Via Terremark Acquisition

There is no turning back for Verizon, the telecommunications and broadband giant, as they sealed off a $1.4 billion-worth of purchase of Terremark Worldwide Inc. Verizon Communications Inc. took a full 180 degree turn and reshapes the business technology solutions with a definitive move to acquire a global provider of IT infrastructure and global services. This acquisition is expected to propel an “Everything as-a-Service” tactic by leveraging an organization’s collective strength.

Following this big announcement, Lowell McAdam, President and Chief Operating Officer of Verizon expresses his confidence on cloud computing will define businesses of today and why they decided to acquire Terremark, saying, “Cloud computing continues to fundamentally alter the way enterprises procure, deploy and manage IT resources, and this combination helps create a tipping point for ‘everything-as-a-service. Our collective vision will foster innovation, enhance business processes and dynamically deliver business intelligence and collaboration services to anyone, anywhere and on any device.”

At the other end of the rope is Manuel D. Medina, chairman and CEO of Terremark, as he explained how they want to retain the brand, and how this agreement would benefit stockholders. He notes that “this transaction, first and foremost, provides Terremark’s stockholders with the opportunity for immediate, maximum value and liquidity for their investment in our common stock.

“We are very proud of all we’ve accomplished in building and developing a world-class business that delivers industry-leading services. This agreement represents an exciting opportunity to accelerate our strategy and serve our enterprise and government customers with even greater innovation on a global scale with Verizon’s resources and extensive reach. We will continue to work with leading hardware, software, systems integrator and carrier partners to build on our unique business model.”

What most people fear from the cloud is securing their data. But what is not often discussed is that as the demand for data security grows so as the architecture to address this concern becomes more sophisticated and targeted. Marvin Wheeler, Chief Strategy Officer of Terremark further explains the cloud computing concept in an interview with Wikibon’s Dave Vallente.

Now, what makes this acquisition more special is that Verizon will be utilizing a hybrid cloud for their computing needs. Hybrid cloud is a combination of both private (currently being utilized by HP, IBM, VMware and Cisco) and public (which Google, Amazon and Microsoft are enjoying). An interesting pictogram shows the comparison between the 3 cloud platforms that anchor big enterprises’ computing requirements.
