Firefox 4 for Android Picks HTML5 Over Flash

firefox-world-logo Only a week ago, Mozilla released Firefox 4—after a great deal of work on betas for both the PC and Android versions—and now we’ve been graced with the Android release. The biggest feature apparent on the Android Firefox that belongs to recent innovation happens to be that they’ve gone with HTML5 instead of Adobe Flash.

It will still support Flash, but Firefox 4 for Android will be bringing us the next major evolution in HTML and video:

One thing Firefox mobile doesn’t have is support for Flash, even though Android has a big partnership with Adobe to make Flash work on mobile. I spoke with some folks from Mozilla yesterday about this topic. Eventually, Firefox mobile will support Flash, but it is just not there yet in terms of responsiveness. The focus right now is on HTML5 and CSS. It is amazing some of the 3D effects, animations, video, and other in-browser graphics you can now get with HTML5.

A link is even included for those who want to see HTML5 in action.

This is a little bit of a step aside for Android offerings as the mobile OS has heavily favored Flash being that they have that partnership with Adobe. Looking forward, however, it’s obvious that HTML5 is coming into its own in the mobile market and not embracing it will leave software developers behind. As Flash runs hot and a little bit CPU heavy and as a result it’s been shied away from primarily by Apple in lieu of the lighter weight HTML5 for streaming video on mobile. Adobe has responded by providing the ability to translate Flash programs into HTML5 and has added a pack for its Illustrator CS5.

With HTML5 on Firefox and Android, penetration of this technology will continue to take over the web market. Especially seeing that Facebook intends to heavily invest in mobile and HTML5 and game developers like MocoSpace are already pressing ahead with HTML5 into the mobile sphere.
