SpaceX’s record IPO, Bezos’ Prometheus rising and Anthropic’s controversial call for AI limits

Blastoff! Elon Musk’s SpaceX went public Thursday evening and raised a stunning $75 billion, easily an all-time record.

Investors bid the stock up 19% over the $135 asking price Friday morning, then shares closed at about $161, giving the company a valuation $2.1 trillion. It’s likely to bode well for other AI-related offerings to come this year or next. The IPO is just the first of the triumvirate of AI leaders — yes, SpaceX owns xAI, surely a large part of its overall valuation.

OpenAI filed confidentially for its IPO as it promised its “superapp” is coming, following Anthropic’s lead last week. OpenAI’s offering could come as early as later this year, while Anthropic’s timing sounds even less certain. Stocks aren’t necessarily a zero-sum game, but investors don’t have bottomless pockets either, so you have to wonder where all that money isn’t going to go now.

Even as Anthropic released yet another set of AI models this week, CEO Dario Amodei doubled down on his insistence that governments need the power to limit AI models as they get more and more powerful. Its own restrictions haven’t exactly made it a lot of friends either.

Meantime, Apple announced Siri AI at its WWDC conference, powered in part by Google’s Gemini. Everyone has been saying Apple is sorely late to the game, and they’re not wrong. But if Siri works as advertised, the iPhone could become one of the few default AI devices — with a massive set of services via the Apple Store — making it possible in a time of massive confusion and controversy over AI that it could steal a march.

Jeff Bezos’ Prometheus just raised $12 billion, matching its high ambitions of developing a set of AI tools to speed up hardware development by 10 times or more — everything from robots, jet engines and drugs to cloud data centers and chip design.

Next week is part two of “data platforms month” as Databricks holds its annual Data + AI Summit, two weeks after the rival Snowflake Summit. We’ll have all the news, analysis and interviews, and don’t miss Dave Vellante’s and George Gilbert’s latest Breaking Analysis to prep for it.

Also on the docket is Pure Accelerate, Pure Storage’s annual conference, where we’re likely to hear how CEO Charlie Giancarlo aims to position its storage products and services in the new AI world, as data and data platforms become even more central to how enterprises will make AI work for them. And finally there’s HPE Discover next week as well.

Here’s all of this week’s enterprise and emerging tech news and views from SiliconANGLE, theCUBE, theCUBE Research and beyond:
