Native Support for Cross-Platform Mobile Dev Grows with Appcelerator Buy

Appcelerator, the integrated mobile platform for rapidly developing native and mobile web applications using open web technologies, announced their acquisition of Particle Code, creator of the award-winning cross-platform Particle SDK and mobile gaming and HTML5 development platform.

The acquisition will enable Appcelerator to expand their own Titanium platform used by over 1.6 million developers, looking to become the first mobile platform to offer an integrated native, hybrid, and HTML5 web application solution.  This puts Appcelerator in a top position for cross-platform development frameworks,  now able to offer both web and native app development from a singular code base to developers in every app category.  This is Appcelerator’s second acquisition this year; the first one was back in January when they acquired Aptana, an open source development tool.

“The Particle Code acquisition is a big win for mobile developers across the board,” explained Jeff Haynie, CEO, Appcelerator. “As fragmentation among proprietary mobile vendors increases, Appcelerator offers an open source, integrated mobile platform as a better approach for unifying cross-platform native and HTML5 mobile web development.”

The Particle Code acquisition will fast-track the build of Appcelerator Titanium, Appcelerator’s open source, flagship platform.  It allows them to expand beyond native iOS and Android mobile applications and into HTML5 mobile web and gaming. This provides a path for developers concerned about increasing fragmentation in the market between Adobe’s Flash, native development and a variety of HTML5 frameworks.  By enabling both web and native mobile application development from one singular codebase, Appcelerator allows developers to bridge the divide and create a platform-agnostic mobile strategy that will be optimized on every device and evolve with the ecosystem moving forward, regardless of how the platform wars shake out.

The Particle Code team represents over 100 combined engineering years in every mobile, smartphone and desktop platform and was recently named a Top 10 Mobile Startup by Laptop Magazine and has now joined Appcelerator’s iOS, Android, and HTML5 core platform group in Mountain View, California.

“Game and rich media developers are notoriously picky about performance, demanding that apps deliver a first-class experience on every device. We’re excited to bring these technical capabilities to Appcelerator and help Titanium go for the win in this disruptive space,” added Galia Benartzi, Particle Code’s CEO.

Last September, Appcelerator announced the Open Mobile Marketplace, a venue for ISVs and cloud providers to sell software and solutions across multiple mobile operating systems on Appcelerator’s industry-leading Titanium platform and to its growing developer community of more than 1.5 million developers.

The surge in demand for mobile devices as well as apps and a platform that would work well with any device, Appcelerator is proving that they are ready for what the market needs.
