A Comparison of Mythical Phones: iPhone 5 vs. Galaxy S3

We’re hearing a lot of buzz regarding two devices yet to be unveiled.  Yeah, this is about the Samsung Galaxy S3 and Apple’s iPhone 5.  Even before they become a reality, the two are quite competitive with each other, so let’s fuel the flames a bit by making a comparison of these highly rumored products.

This article will be divided in several categories and we’ll look at what the two have under each particular category.  So let’s get right into it.

Rumored device/s

Apple is said to be launching an iPhone 5 by October, though a Foxconn recruiter stated that they’re readying for a June launch, and new reports suggests that the company will also launch a nano, or smaller iPhone, which will be cheaper than the iPhone 5.

Samsung, on the other hand, is said to be launching the Galaxy S3 at their May 3 event in London, but other reports suggest that they will also launch a tablet that complements the smartphone.

Design

iPhone 5:

Will have a tapered or teardrop design with an oval touch capacitive Home button, though a photo from TVC-Mall, a Chinese vendor that sells iDevice parts shows a rounded square home button, will be encased in Liquidmetal, or metallic glass casing which is deemed stronger than previous casings.

Galaxy S3:

Will have a firm ceramic casing, with Menu, Back and Home buttons, dedicated buttons for S-Cloud and Voice-Assistance, and the possibility of an included S-Pen.

Display

iPhone 5:

Will have in-cell touch panels for the touch functionality without adding an additional glass, making the device thinner and lighter measuring at 7.9mm; a 4-4.6-inch display with a Quantum Dot LED curved glass with edge-to-edge display having a 1280 x 720 resolution (367ppi); 3D screen.

Galaxy S3:

Offers a 4.65-4.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus full HD touch screen with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution at a whopping 319 ppi, non-PenTile display matrix arrangement to ensure smaller pixels at 2.5 micrometers for better brightness and resolution, with a 3D screen.

Internal features

iPhone 5:

Features A5X’s S5L8945X or A6 chip, quad core processor, 1GB of RAM and available in 16, 32 and 64 GB memory.

Galaxy S3:

Features a quad-core ARM A9-based Exynos 4212 chipset with a clock speed of 1.8GHz with 2GB of RAM but some sources say that it will have the Exynos 4412, which is a quad-core system-on-a-chip made with four Cortex A9 processors running at 1.5 GHz.  It will come with a 16GB internal memory which can be expanded up to 32GB.

OS and other technologies

iPhone 5:

iOS 6, iWallet and Near Field Communication (NFC) technology; 4G LTE; Face Unlock; an 8 megapixel (or even higher) camera with the ability to take pictures in the panorama mode, a 2 megapixel front-facing camera for video chatting; improved Siri; and a much-improved battery life, though reports suggest that it still features the same battery as the iPhone 4S, a 3.7V and 5.3Whr battery.

Galaxy S3:

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and NFC, it’s rumored to be the official  2012 Summer Olympics device.  It’s expected to come with 4G LTE, eye-tracking technology for its front-facing camera and Face Unlock technology; 12 megapixel camera with a 1/2.3-inch sensor, TouchWiz user interface.
