Will We See an iPhone 5 at WWDC? Probably Not. Try an Apple TV.
The much awaited Apple Worldwide Developers Conference is set to begin next week, June 11-15 in San Francisco. Attendees won’t even have to bring their Mi-Fis, as a Wi-Fi and Ethernet connections will be available throughout the venue. Wi-Fi users just need to select the “WWDC2012” network and enter “wwdc2012” when prompted while Ethernet users just need to bring their USB Ethernet adapter.
A WWDC 2012 app is available for download in the App Store allowing attendees to browse the conference’s schedule of sessions, labs, and special events as well as mark and view favorites, get notified on the latest news, access maps to find your way around Moscone West, and view daily snapshots from WWDC.
There’s so much hype surrounding the event, so let’s look at what we expect to see next week.
Oh, the rumors!
Though some are expecting Apple to unveil the iPhone 5 at this year’s WWDC, we have to remember that this event is more software focused than hardware. What analysts are expecting are updates to Apple’s current iOS and OS X or the next version of their iOS.
“Frankly I would be very surprised if they do announce the iPhone 5,” said Shaw Wu, an analyst with Sterne Agee, in an interview. “We think WWDC will be more about software.” Wu said he believes Apple will launch an iPhone 5 in the fall, with a bigger screen and developed for faster LTE networks. But he added, considering it is Apple, “you never know.”
And Wu is correct in saying that we can’t be too sure with Apple, as they often have something up their sleeves. If we look back, in 2006 Apple announced the Mac Pro and in 2009, they announced the 15-inch MacBook Pro, so we might expect to see a new Mac Book this year since Apple seems to be announcing hardware at the WWDC every three years.
And according to 9to5Mac, Apple will be announcing an update to four out of their five Mac lines, namely the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iMac, Mac mini, and Mac Pro. Rumor has it that Apple will be releasing two configurations of the redesigned 15-inch MacBook Pro, and that there will be an 11 inch and 13 inch MacBook Airs with Retina Displays. The other update is said to be for the iMac, then the fourth update is still unclear as to whether it will be for the Mac Pro or Mac mini.
Another rumor is that Apple is said to be unveiling the Apple television at the event, but analysts are saying that will be launching the said TV during December and will be ready to be shipped early 2013. Though everyone seems to be anticipating Apple’s TV, everyone is also wonderng what would make it stand out from the rest. What edge would it have against other SmartTVs? Guess we’ll all just have to wait until Monday to find out what Apple has to offer.
