Smartphone or Camera? Rise in Photo-Sharing Questions Our Mobile Purpose

JiWire, the location-based mobile media provider reaching the on-the-go audience, released its latest photo sharing report, which examines location based photo sharing engagement, the mobile devices and user usage trends.

The recent survey in Q2 2012 found that location based photo sharing is on rise and driving the mobile trends, with 83 percent of the on-the-go audience taking pictures while on the go, and 72 percent users use their smartphone or tablet as their primary photo sharing device.

Location-Tag Sharing

The report says 64 percent of travelling users take five or more picture per week. Men like to tag the picture location to connect with others while women prefer picture sharing to notify family and friends.

Additionally, 31 percent tag to remember the picture location, and 33 percent realize the benefits of providing information to friends and family.  Moreover, parents tend to tag more (20 percent) to inform friends and family of travel and experience.

Rise of Photo Sharing Apps

Photos are a big part of people’s media and entertainment life as well. With the surge in the use of smartphones, the act of sharing photos is gaining popularity. Within a year, photo-sharing mobile app Instagram has become quite a phenomenon, likely due to its variety of photo filters, tagging and ease of use.

According to recent numbers released by Flurry, photo and video apps make up the fastest-growing app category from July 2011 through March 2012. Both the categories registered 89 percent growth in minutes spent per active user.

“Beyond the topical Instagram success story, chances are that future hits are among these categories,” Flurry noted. “Some apps with momentum today include Path, Skout, Viddy, SocialCam, Evernote, Spotify and more.”

Warner Bros’ Out of Window

The uptick in consumer activity around photo-sharing is an attractive lure for existing media companies, especially as the business world seeks to monetize this behavior.  One of Hollywood’s biggest studio for film and TV is entering into online photo sharing business with a new service dubbed Out of Window.

Targeted at young women and moms, the photo sharing service is designed for people who frequently share and email pictures but don’t want to use social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter or Google Plus that can allow pictures to be seen by outsiders.

According to Warner Bros., the application allows you to set up a profile so you can provide and share photographs, their location, ratings, favorites, albums, connect your profile with friends, and make purchases.

Out of Window also allow users to share images with friends and family on your mobile devices, and even on TVs.

“We’ve focused on a particular segment that has communicated they want to share online, but within the network of people they care about,” said Darcy Antonellis, Warner Bros.’ president of technical operations and originator of the concept for Out My Window. “We are a studio that makes and creates film and television as a part of that media and entertainment system, so we thought of this as a complementary way to engage with the consumer.”

Aviary Launches Photo Editing App

Another notable launch in the photo-sharing space comes from the Picnik replacement, Aviary. Aviary, which offers photo editing tool for third part mobile and web apps such as Facebook and Flickr, just released its own native photo-editing app for iOS and Android.

Just like Instagram, the slick mobile photo editor includes lots of photo enhancements, filters, stickers and crop options.

Extra features for the mobile apps include red-eye fix, whiten teeth and hide skin blemishes, fun options such as draw, text and meme, and more customization options.
