Sepaton Releases New Data Backup and Protection Solution

Sepaton, which specialized in disk-based data protection solutions, has released new software for backing up and restoring large databases. The new solution, DeltaStor DBeXstream, supports simultaneous deduplication and parallel processing across multiple ports, which give customers both fast backups and smaller backup sizes. Size and speed are typically mutually exclusive in backup solutions, the ability to achieve both at the same time make Septon’s solution stand out.

Sepaton also got in a battle of words with Hewlett-Packard (HP) earlier this month over deduplication technology. HP announced it had enhanced its deduplication capabilities at HP Discover. HP claimed it could ingest data at 100TB/hour and spitting it out at 40TB/hour, faster by far than anything else on the market. Industry watchers hypothesized the performance boost would effectively end HP’s reseller relationship with Sepaton. Sepaton had a few words to say about HP’s claims, saying,

“The HP B6200 offers the least capable de-dupe in the industry. Each tape device on a B6200 is effectively a distinct de-dupe domain. Backups sent to a one drive don’t de-dupe against backups sent to another drive on the same node! What happens when you’re back up exceeds the capability of one drive?”

HP retorted explaining its platform is a single logical system and a terrific solution.

The disagreement and constant stream of new products illustrate how competitive the market is becoming. Dell released a new version of AppAssure at the recent Dell Storage forum. Dell’s backup solution works in virtual and physical environments, supports fast live recoveries and leverages deduplication to compress backup sizes by 80 percent. In addition, there are no backup jobs with AppAssure, the solution continuous backs up data by taking 288 snapshots a day and replicating them to storage.

Storage leader EMC articulated its vision for backups at this year’s EMC World. The company’s strategy is similar to what’s offered by Dell AppAssure. EMC’s vision involves more use of storage-based, application-consistent snapshots of data and remote replication of changes in the snapshot. The strategy allows backup data to remain in its original format and not in the format of the backup software, which enables easier use of backup data
