Battle of the Minis: Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini vs iPad Mini

Two tech giants are said to be releasing “mini” versions of their flagship devices, shaking up the market just before the holiday shopping season kicks in.  Samsung already confirmed that they’ll be unveiling the Galaxy SIII Mini or Mini Galaxy SIII tomorrow, but Apple is still keeping mum about the rumored iPad Mini.

Though the Galaxy SIII Mini and the iPad Mini are different devices, they’re both mini versions of popular gadgets, so we thought it would be interesting to compare them.

Samsung Galaxy SIII Mini vs. iPad Mini

Some suggest that the Galaxy SIII Mini will have the same specifications as the original version and the size /screen size would be the only difference, but others surmise that other features will also be downgraded.  All the while, the iPad Mini is said to have the specifications of the second generation iPad.

It should be noted that the comparison is based on speculated specifications.  The iPad Mini’s specs for this piece were taken from the iPad 2, as it is believed that the iPad Mini will replace the iPad 2 in competing with cheaper tablets.  And the Galaxy SIII Mini’s specs were taken from the original version or other’s speculations.

Screen

iPad Mini: 7.85” 1024-by-768-pixel resolution at 132 pixels per inch (ppi), Fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating

Galaxy SIII Mini: 4” HD Super AMOLED, Corning Gorilla Glass that provides exceptional damage resistance to the drops, bumps, and scrapes of everyday use. Resolution may either be 1280×720 or 800 x 480 pixels.

Capacity

iPad Mini: Possibly 16GB only

Galaxy SIII Mini: 16GB, 32GB, 64GB versions that can be upgraded to up to 64GB via MicroSD

Chips

iPad Mini: A5 or A5X chip which is a rendition of a chip based upon the dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore CPU[11] with NEON SIMD accelerator and a dual-core PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU. Or maybe the A6.

Galaxy SIII Mini: Exynos 4 Quad processor @ 1.4Ghz for HSPA version, and 1GB of RAM.

OS

iPad Mini: iOS 6

Galaxy SIII Mini: Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

Camera

iPad Mini: VGA front camera, Video recording, HD (720p) up to 30 frames per second with audio; still camera with 5x digital zoom

Galaxy SIII Mini: Main(Rear): 8 Mega pixel Auto Focus camera with Flash & Zero Shutter Lag, BSI; Sub (Front): 1.9 Mega pixel camera, HD recording @30fps with Zero Shutter Lag, BSI; Best photo or a 5MP rear camera and a 1.2MP HD front camera.

Cellular and Wireless

iPad Mini: May only come in WiFi version which would be pointless and seem like you just bought a bigger iPod Touch.

Galaxy SIII Mini: 2.5G (GSM/ GPRS/ EDGE): 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz; 3G (HSPA+ 21Mbps): 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 MHz; 4G (Dependent on market); WiFi a/b/g/n, WiFi HT40; GPS/GLONASS; NFC; Bluetooth 4.0(LE)

Battery

iPad Mini: Up to 10 hours of surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching video, or listening to music

Galaxy SIII Mini: 2,100 mAh or 1,500 mAh

Release date

iPad Mini: October 17 and will be available for purchase on November 2

Galaxy SIII Mini: To be unveiled tomorrow, October 11, no news yet as to when the device would be available in the market.

Conclusion

Based on the speculated specifications of the two devices, and though they are different devices, one is a smartphone and the other a tablet, the Samsung Galaxy SIII Mini is better.  First off, I’m a fan of the Corning Gorilla Glass and if the Galaxy SIII Mini will have the same specs as the original, then it will have the Smart Stay, Best Photo, Smart Alert, and Direct Call features as well as the S Beam which is possible with NFC technology.  And with the complaints iPhone 5 users have about their new iDevice, I could just imagine how bad the iPad Mini would be since Apple seems to be rushing its production.

And if you’re a Fandroid who loves poking fun at Apple, their iDevices or Fanbois, then you’ll certainly get a kick out of this iPad Mini parody. Enjoy!
