Apple Loses Tablet Design Appeal In UK

In today’s mobile news roundup: Apple loses tablet design appeal in UK; Nokia reports $1.27 billion loss; and Google sent out invites for October 29 event.

Apple loses tablet design appeal in UK

A UK court denied Apple’s appeal in the design infringement lawsuit they filed against Samsung.  Back in July, a UK judge ruled that Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 did not infringe Apple’s iPad design, stating it wasn’t cool enough.  The court ordered the iPhone maker to advertise on their stores, website, news publications and magazines that Samsung did not copy their product.  Apple was not happy with the ruling and filed for an appeal, but was denied.

Samsung, on the other hand, was pleased with the new ruling.

“We continue to believe that Apple was not the first to design a tablet with a rectangular shape and rounded corners and that the origins of Apple’s registered design features can be found in numerous examples of prior art.

“Should Apple continue to make excessive legal claims in other countries based on such generic designs, innovation in the industry could be harmed and consumer choice unduly limited,” Samsung’s spokeswoman said.

Nokia reports $1.27 billion loss

Nokia reports a sixth straight quarterly loss as their line of Lumia phones failed to gain traction in the mobile market.  The Finnish company reported a third quarter net loss of $1.27 billion.  But stocks rose by 3.6 percent after the company announced that they are expecting to have narrower loss next quarter.  Nokia’s been struggling to maintain its foothold in the market having lost a significant portion of its customer base to Apple and Google.  Consumers heven’t shown enough interest in purchasing a Nokia-Microsoft handset, as there are more popular options coming from Apple, Samsung and other Android OEMs.

Google sent invites for October 29 event

The end of October is jam-packed, with Apple’s event, Microsoft’s launch of Windows 8, Surface tablets, and Windows Phone 8 devices, but competitor Google is not about to let its rivals have all the fun.

Google sent out invites for an event on October 29 in New York City with a simple, “The playground is open,” tagline.  The event starts at 10 AM but the doors open at 9:15AM.  People are expecting that Google will unveil a new Nexus smartphone, rumored to be from LG, and a 32GB version of the Nexus 7.
