Is Android the Answer to Zynga’s Woes? Game Maker Pulls the Plug on 11 Facebook Games

Social game developer Zynga announced that 11 of its least popular titles are either barred new players or have been shut down entirely. The move is a part of a broader initiative orchestrated by founding CEO Mark Pincus to cut costs and and invest more in the company’s more profitable games.

Here’s a compiled list of the games that are no longer available:

PetVille – Shut down December 30th
Mafia Wars 2 – Shut down December 30th
FishVille – Shut down December 5th
Vampire Wars – Shut down December 5th
Treasure Isle – Shut down December 5th
Indiana Jones Adventure World – Closed to new players, shuts down January 14th
Mafia Wars Shakedown – Pulled from app stores
Forestville – Pulled from app stores
Montopia – Shut down December 21st
Mojitomo – Pulled from app stores
Word Scramble Challenge – Pulled from app stores

The shutdown brings down the total number of Zynga games on the market to 30, including its mobile apps and titles on Zynga.com, MySpace and other social networks. Players of some the games that were brought down this month, including FishVille, Adventure World and a few others, are eligible for a free bag of goodies in one of the company’s top Facebook games.

In 2013, we will likely see Zynga bolster its presence on iOS and Android devices. A recent survey found that seven of the ten highest grossing iPad apps in 2012 were games, compared with the even more impressive 10 out of 10 on the iPhone. Zynga’s Pokey is the third most profitable game on the iPhone list but the company has virtually no presence in the paid tablet market, a status it may seek to change in the coming months.
