What Should You Expect to See At GDC 2013

The Game Developers Conference 2013, scheduled to kick off at San Francisco’s Moscone Convention Center from March 25 to March 29, is going to be a pilgrimage for the gaming industry professionals and lovers. The event is expected to have over 23,000 attendees from all across the globe, and falls in the league of Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) that will be held in Los Angeles in June.

A lot of excitement is going around the event as it will not only showcase the latest trends in the gaming industry, but will also mark the changes that have happened across the games industry in recent years. Unlike last year, the conference will not stage a keynote talk this year because it takes the whole crowd away from other sessions. But yes, there will be some last-minute sessions from Sony, which plans to describe the recently announced PlayStation 4 video game console in more detail.

With 400 lectures, panels, and roundtables, 300 exhibitors will be participating in the GDC 2013, and feature trending issues like Kickstarter crowdfunding, live video streaming, browser-based hardcore social games, and disruptive tablet games. Prominent speakers include:

• Jenova Chen, the co-creator of Journey at Thatgamecompany
• Raphael Colantino and Harvey Smith, Dishonored’s creative leaders
• Anthony Birch, Borderlands 2 writer
• Hideo Kojima, Metal Gear franchise creator
• Joe Staten and Christopher Barrett of Bungie
• Jonathon Banks, The Walking Dead creator
• Dead Space 3 creators from Electronic Arts

Reportedly, Microsoft’s Xbox 720 will be a hot topic of discussion at GDC 2013. It will be actually an act of unveiling teaser info and details for the Xbox 720 at GDC, with the full load of details coming at E3 2013.

Bungie has also prepped for its upcoming session, where it will discuss its upcoming game – Destiny. With the presentation, titled ‘Brave New World: New Bungie IP’, promises to give attendees an hour-long insight into the team’s world building process, with a specific focus on the collaboration between art and design.

Here’s the teaser description of the Bungie’s GDC session:

“For the first time ever, Bungie creative directors will discuss their world building techniques, from concept to production. Attendees will walk away with key insights into Bungie’s battle-tested design process. They’ll get a glimpse of the brave new world that has been built, a place where the next ten years of great Bungie adventures will unfold.”

A few days back, Bungie Studios invited the press into its Seattle-area studio to get the first look at Destiny, but scant few details were given by the company. Instead of giving any thorough game preview, it showed off the concept art. Besides, keeping the surprise on, Bungie didn’t reveal the launch date too.

All in all, GDC 2013 is expected to have a really happening event, with lots of new products launched, trends noted, and changes discussed. Stay tuned while we get back with more details as the dates come closer.
