Apps At The Ready For iOS 7
Yesterday Apple finally unveiled its long-awaited new devices: the iPhone 5c and 5s. If you missed our coverage from yesterday, you can check here for the full specs of both devices, and an in-depth look at the new fingerprint security of the iPhone 5s.
Aside from the devices, Apple kicked off the event with a recap of iOS 7, its mobile operating system that’ll be available to download on September 18, two days before the new devices go on sale in retail stores. To recap iOS 7’s new features, the OS now has a more aesthetically pleasing design, with lots of color on the redesigned app icons, it has a new notification and control center, but perhaps most importantly, it all seems rather reminiscent of the Android platform.
Much of what we became familiar with in earlier versions of iOS have been redone. From simple color changes to improved multitasking to the weather app now reflecting the weather on the screen instead of just telling you the temperature. The biggest change lies in the camera and photo apps. The camera app now has filters and it’s UI has been revamped. For the photos, it now represents a timeline wherein photos are grouped according to Years, Collections, and Moments. It also introduces a new way for people to share files via Bluetooth or WiFi, dubbed as AirDrop.
All these features and enhancements look awesome, it’s like Apple’s way of saying it actually loves Android :)
But the question is, will there be any apps compatible with the iOS 7 when it comes out?
In preparation, Apple sent an email to developers instructing them on how to go about preparing for the new platform.
“iOS 7 will soon be in the hands of hundreds of millions of customers. Reimagine your app’s interface with the clarity, translucency and depth of iOS 7. Integrate APIs for AirDrop, multitasking, games, and camera, as well as new APIs that take advantage of the powerful new capabilities of iPhone 5s,” the email read.
Developers have been instructed to download the GM seed of iOS 7 and Xcode 5 to test and optimize their apps for the iOS 7 and submit their updated apps. Developers can download GM seed version 11A465 here.
This means, right now, aside from Apple’s native apps, there aren’t any iOS 7-ready apps available yet. But that doesn’t mean there won’t be. At the event two apps were announced which will already be available for iOS 7, and there’s also a company offers enterprise ready servers based on the iOS 7.
iOS 7 ready
Zillow
Zillow, the real estate and rental service, has already announced that it’s app is ready for iOS 7. The app will feature a restructured, photo-driven search experience, reformatted search results list and completely redesigned listing detail pages with large photos and interactive components. The new version of the app will be available on September 18, same day as the iOS 7 launch, or you can just download the old app and wait for the alert to update the app.
Infinity Blade III
Gamers will be delighted with the fact that Infinity Blade 3 will also be launching on September 18, and will be available for download for iOS 7. During yesterday’s event, attendees were given a glimpse of what Infinity Blade III on iOS 7 would look like, and it looks very impressive indeed. Still, hardcore gamers probably won’t enjoy playing such a game on a touchscreen device, as games like this are best enjoyed on gaming consoles with controllers that you can throw or smash when you get too frustrated.
Cortado
The enterprise is also getting ready for iOS 7. Cortado recently announced the arrival of Corporate Server 7, which incorporates a host of new business features that are based on Apple’s forthcoming iOS 7. It is designed for the enterprise focused on mobility solutions where productivity is the main concern. It has everything needed for mobile device management as well as enterprise security and advanced functionality.
Aside from those apps, Apple CEO Tim Cook also announced that iWorks, its best selling productivity app, will now be free with every purchase of a new iOS device. iWorks include Pages, Numbers, iMovie, Keynote, and iPhoto. The iWorks apps don’t appear to have been overhauled for iOS 7.
