QLogic inks OEM deal with Huawei for Gen 5 adapters

QLogic announced on Tuesday that its FlexSuite 2600 Series 16Gb Fibre Channel adapters have started shipping with Huawei’s Tecal RH rack servers and X Series high-density data center boxes. The launch comes two months after the networking equipment provider introduced two HBAs for environments running HP’s ProLiant Generation 8 blades or servers. Like the 2600, the adapters are based on QLogic’s Gen 5 Fibre Channel application-specific integrated circuit, which provides three times the IOPS and double the throughput of the previous generation architecture.

Huawei is reselling the technology under its own brand in single-port and dual-port configurations. The adapters support more virtual machines per physical server than alternatives and provide port isolation to minimize service interruptions in the event of networking problems. Gen 5 Fibre Channel has the added benefit of being fully compatible with 8Gb and 4Gb Fibre Channel infrastructure, which lets customers make the most out of their existing SANs. The ASIC is designed to power I/O-intensive applications such as real time transaction systems and data warehouses.

“Our latest collaboration with Huawei helps QLogic extend its longstanding leadership position in Fibre Channel adapters and strengthen our growing presence in China,” said Vikram Karvat, the vice president of marketing at QLogic. “QLogic Gen 5 Fibre Channel adapter technology provides large OEM customers such as Huawei with a competitive advantage by delivering unique features, such as port-level isolation, which increase reliability and scalable performance in our dual-port adapters.”

The Gen 5 lineup helped QLogic increase its share of the Fibre Channel market by 12 percent in the third quarter, according to research firm Dell’Oro. The vendor accounted for 54 percent of overall revenues in this space, 15.4 percent more than the nearest competitor.
