Smart ring controls your environment via gestures

This week’s Smart Health roundup features a ring that hopes to revolutionize the way you interact with the connected world, a scanner that makes sense of your surroundings, and an upgraded smartwatch that gets cozier than ever with other connected gadgets.

Nod Labs recently announced Nod, an advanced gesture control ring that allows the wearer to interact with connected devices such as smartphones, tablets, thermostat, wearable tech, TVs, without touching them.

Nod is a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)-enabled device that is waterproof to 5 ATM or 165 feet, and comes in over 12 different sizes.  Wear it on your finger and start controlling things around you by pointing and performing gestures naturally.  It supports intuitive micro-gestures including swipe, rotate, multi finger and 3D gestures for natural interaction.  Gamers will also love Nod as it acts as a 32K DPI high-precision controller, and they can even wear multiple Nods for better gaming control.

Nod comes with its own app discovery portal, which includes a gestural glide keyboard, a remote camera shutter trigger for selfies, along with a long list of supported apps and smart devices such as Nest, Hue, GoPro, WeMo, LG TVs (2012+), Roku and more.

When you’re not using Nod, you can charge it in its docking station where it looks like a modern and stylish display for your nightstand.

“There has always been a computing revolution around new input methods – the keyboard, the mouse, the touchscreen,” said Anush Elangovan, Founder and CEO of Nod Labs. “Nod’s touchless interaction is the next such revolution, where the human body becomes the input device.”

Nod will be shipping in Fall 2014 and you can pre-order your nod for $149.

Scan your world to understand it

 .

Consumer Physics recently unveiled its newest product, SCiO, a handheld sensor that scans the molecular fingerprint of physical matter and instantly provides useful information about its chemical makeup.  The device delivers real-time results to its mobile app on a user’s smartphone via Bluetooth LE.

scio makeups“Smartphones give us instant answers to questions like where to have dinner, what movie to see, and how to get from point A to point B, but when it comes to learning about what we interact with on a daily basis we’re left in the dark,” said Dror Sharon, CEO of Consumer Physics. “We designed SCiO to empower explorers everywhere with new knowledge and to encourage them to join our mission of mapping the physical world.”

SCiO will start shipping this fall and it will include apps to help users identify the composition of food, medication and plants.  The food app will deliver macro nutrient values such as calories, fat, carbohydrates, and proteins, the quality of the food, its ripeness, and spoilage analysis for various foods including cheeses, fruits, vegetables, sauces, salad dressings, cooking oils and more.

SCiO’s accompanying medicine app can help  identify and authenticate medication in real-time by cross-checking a pill’s molecular makeup to a database of medications.  And for the plant app, SCiO will be able to analyze the moisture level in plants and tell users when they need to be watered.

Consumer Physics also supports an Application Development Kit, which will allow third-party developers to custom-build their unique apps to better understand composition of different items.  SCiO can analyze an endless amount of materials such as cosmetics, clothes, flora, soil, jewels and precious stones, leather, rubber, oils, plastics, and even human tissue or bodily fluids.

If you want to pre-order your very own SCiO today, you can do so by supporting its Kickstarter campaign.
