Dropbox acquires CloudOn, continuous international expansion

Dropbox CEO Drew Houston

Following a busy year in 2014, with no less than nine acquisitions, Dropbox has made its first acquisition of 2015 in the form of U.S.-Israeli app maker, CloudOn. The move is part of Dropbox’s international expansion effort and aimed at providing an end-to-end solution to users.

CloudOn develops tools that allow users to create and edit documents on mobile devices. Most notably is the ability to create and edit Microsoft Office documents on the go. The company, founded in 2009, has its headquarters in Mountain View, California, with an office in Herzliya, Israel.

CloudOn’s 30+ employees will join Dropbox and the Israeli office will become the company’s base for “aggressive hiring” in the region, Ilya Fushman, head of product, business and mobile at Dropbox told the Wall Street Journal in an interview.

The terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but Fushman confirmed that ClounOn is the largest acquisition Dropbox has made in terms of number of employees added.

According to CruncgBase, CloudOn has raised $26 million from investors including The Social+Capital Partnership, TransLink Capital, Foundation Capital and Rembrandt Venture Partners. The company has nine million users who are all being notified via email of the acquisition. No new users are being accepted as of yesterday and the service will ultimately be shut down on March 15, 2015.

Staff will immediately begin work on Dropbox products.

Dropbox said it has more than 300 million users, 70 percent of whom are outside the U.S. The company has international offices in Dublin, Sydney and Tokyo.
