An open-software platform for smart homes

ABB, Robert Bosch GmbH and Cisco Systems Inc. have formed a joint venture called mozaiq operations GmbH, which aims to create and operate an open-software platform for smart homes. The platform aims to unify standalone solutions for the smart home so connected devices can better communicate with one another.

By providing a unifying platform, consumers won’t be forced into purchasing only one brand of connected devices, but they can purchase different products from different brands and still have them work seamlessly together.

Acer partners with startup incubator for IoT app development

As part of its Blue Sky IoT initiative, Acer Inc. has partnered with startup incubator AppWorks Ventures to promote initiatives in IoT. Blue Sky is a technology that connects various devices to one another as well as to the Internet. With this partnership, Acer has invited six innovation teams who will be showcasing their IoT solutions to the company’s executives. Showcases will be held quarterly and will allow Acer to decide which teams it wants to team up with and further develop their IoT solutions.

Robert Wang, general manager of Acer’s Build Your Own Cloud (BYOC) and tablet business group, stated that the company is interested in working with LongGood and Sentri, two of AppWorks’ developer teams. LongGood utilizes motion sensing and cloud computing to develop a non-contact rehabilitation system to help patients with ambulatory problems get better while Sentri provides complete home monitoring and automation solutions that can be easily accessed by homeowners.

Jins Meme SDK now available for free

Jins Co. Ltd, maker of smart glass Jins Meme, has released the device’s software development kit (SDK) for free. Jins aims to help developers find ways how to utilize the device’s sensing technology for other practical purposes.

Jins Meme is a smart glass that has eye tracking feature to measure the wearer’s physical and mental tiredness, detect when the wearer is getting drowsy so potentially fatal accidents, such as driving while sleepy, can be avoided.

In conjunction with the release of the SDK is Round 2 of the Jins Meme Developer Idea Pitch Contest. Ideas having passed through a challenging selection process will be awarded with a free beta version of JINS MEME. The winner of the First Round was Peripatos, which works with the use of a smartphone to help a person determine which places they felt focused or unfocused.
