Report: Apple Watch hits nearly 1M pre-orders in U.S. on first day, Sport most popular
An estimated 957,000 Apple Watch pre-orders were placed in the U.S. on Friday, April 10, the first day Apple’s highly anticipated smartwatch went on sale. According to Slice Intelligence, a digital commerce measurement firm, e-receipt data from 9,080 online shoppers shows that on average each Apple Watch buyer pre-ordered 1.3 watches, spending an average of $503.83 per watch. Buyers ordering the Apple Watch Sport paid on average $382.83 per watch, and those who bought the mid-tier Apple Watch paid on average $707.04 (via Quartz).
Slice’s projections showed that nearly two-thirds of buyers preferred the aluminum Apple Watch Sport — the least expensive model — starting at $349. Approximately one-third of buyers pre-ordered the stainless-steel Apple Watch model, which retails at $549.
The report did not include pre-order estimates for the high-end gold Apple Watch Edition. This, supposed Quartz, was because the Apple Watch Edition did not garner enough pre-orders in the U.S. to appear on Slice’s report.
When it came to picking band options, it appears buyers opted to spend more on the case and less on the band options, with one-third opting for the less expensive Sport band in black or white.
The majority of Apple Watch buyers — of both the Apple Watch and the Apple Watch Sport — opted for the 42 mm case size, with nearly two-thirds picking the larger case instead of the 38 mm version. Buyers of the Apple Watch Sport were slightly more biased toward the smaller case size, with a third pre-ordering the 38 mm, compared to just 24 percent of Apple Watch buyers.
When it came to other watch case features, the Space Grey aluminum case was by far the most popular among Apple Watch buyers, with 40 percent of buyers picking the color option. The next most popular case option was the stainless-steel version at 34 percent, followed by silver aluminum at 23 percent. The least popular case option turned out to be the Space Black stainless-steel version, accounting for just three percent of pre-orders.
Among the band options for the Apple Watch, the black Sport band accounted for 49 percent of both Apple Watch and Apple Watch Sport buyers, followed by the white Sport band at 16 percent, and in third place, the Milanese Loop accompanied 10 percent of pre-orders.
Slice’s report also showed that many Apple Watch buyers were loyal Apple customers, with 72 percent of those who pre-ordered an Apple Watch having purchased other Apple products in the past two years.
Slice’s report arguably used a very small pool of consumers to extrapolate the estimates above, and it only shows data for the U.S. and not the other eight countries where the Apple Watch went on sale on Friday. Quartz was unable to get confirmation of these numbers from Apple, however. As the week unfolds, we will undoubtedly learn more.
