Health diagnostics startup Scanadu Inc., best known for its “medical tricorder” campaign on Indiegogo, has raised $35 million Series B in a round led by Fosun International that included Tencent Holdings, China Broadband Capital, IGlobe Partners, Sungent BioVenture, Relay Ventures and AME Cloud Ventures.
Founded in 2011, Scanadu brings the Internet of Things to medicine with the Scanadu Scout, a device, a la Star Trek, that lets people track their vitals at home.
The scanner is packed with sensors designed to read vital signs and send them wirelessly to a smartphone, in what the company says is a few seconds, anytime, anywhere.
Its Indiegogo campaign for the Scout closed 1,662% over target, raising slightly above $1.6 million, and the commercial version, expected to sell for $199, will start shipping in 2016.
Its latest product, the Scanadu Scanaflo, tests urine for levels of glucose, protein, leukocytes, nitrites, blood, bilirubin, urobilinogen, microalbumin, creatinine, ketone, specific gravity, and pH.
Neither product has Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval thus far, but has been approved for testing; the company is confident that FDA approval will be forthcoming.
“Scanadu is right at the heart of the next generation of computing which combines mobility, sensors, cloud, and big data,” investor Jerry Yang (or Yahoo fame) said in a statement. “I am bullish on Scanadu and its potential to revolutionize the way we think about our health.”
The new round will be used by Scanadu to assist it in bringing its devices to market, and for FDA approval.
“We continue to build out our family of products and move down the path to regulatory clearance in the U.S. and China,” Scanadu co-founder Walter De Brouwer added. “Scanadu’s mission has always been to give eight billion people access to quality healthcare via their smartphones.”
Including the new round, Scanadu has raised $49.1 million to-date, including the $1.6 million via Indiegogo.
