reddit Founder Alexis Ohanian NEWS

Reddit is launching its own video platform called Reddit Video

Community driven content aggregator Reddit.com will be launching its own multimedia service called Reddit Video. Reddit co-founder and Y Combinator partner Alexis Ohanion announced Reddit Video on stage during the recent TechCrunch Disrupt NY conference.

According to Ohanion, the goal behind Reddit Video is to bring more original content to the site, which has long billed itself as “the frontpage of the internet.” With the exception of text posts, most of Reddit’s content is made up of links to images, articles, videos and other content on external websites.

Users can submit links to their own content, but they can also submit links to anything they want on one of Reddit’s hundreds of thousands of subreddits. This allows the site to have a constantly revolving library of content that essentially takes care of itself.

Reddit Video will be a departure from the site’s nearly 10-year-old community driven link format, as it will feature its own original content. The first videos will feature Reddit’s popular “Ask Me Anything” or AMA series, which allows the Reddit community to pose questions to people ranging from a guy who survived a bear attack in the mountains to  President Obama.

“We produce our content with a community”

Aside from AMAs, it is currently unclear how Reddit plans on leveraging its community to create new video content, but it does look like the site is plans on working with its users for content in the future.

“At Reddit, we have an unfair advantage,” Ohanion said in a promo clip announcing Reddit Video. “We produce our content with a community. Not only does that mean viewers, it also means collaborators.”

Despite the tendency for some of its users to treat the site like a secret club, Reddit is currently the 11th most visited website in the U.S. according to Alexa.com, placing it higher than sites like Bing, Pinterest and Netflix.

When asked what his favorite thing on the internet is, Ohanion responded, “My favorite thing is when I get to see two normal random strangers connect over something and, in a positive way, create something that didn’t exist before.”

He added, “When the internet is at its best, it’s really letting people do that.”
