Using XtremIO to improve your golf game | #emcworld

At EMC World 2015, Chinh Van met with John Furrier and Dave Vellante of theCUBE to talk about infrastructure systems. Van is the director of Global Systems and Infrastructure at Callaway Golf.

The discussion began with a quick and lighthearted mention of the hosts’ golf experience, but soon turned to more serious matters. The subject of interest was flash storage.

Dabbling with XtremIO

Van related how his company was experimenting with XtremIO. It was using its incredible speed to help customers and users make real-time decisions. They also were enjoying the performance and benefits that XtremIO offered. However, the price point of flash storage was still a concern.

He continued with how XtremIO was transforming its business. “It’s starting to change my world,” he said. The benefits of XtremIO allowed him to reduce his storage footprint, but, more importantly, he could make copies of the data for QA and testing without having to buy new hardware. This gave his team a huge boost in production and flexibility.

Ripples in the pond

XtremIO also had impacts in other areas of the company. In particular, developers and testers found it easy to work with the technology. They also enjoyed being able to bring up copies of the live data for testing and development. The XtremIO systems have proven quick and simple to manage.

As for what’s next at Callaway Golf, Van focused on issues of cost. He was looking at tech that would allow his team to be more efficient while reducing costs. That included the price of XtremIO, which he hopes will come down in the near future so that the company could move to an all-flash storage infrastructure. He also mentioned plans to use real-time consumer data to match the customer to the right set of golf clubs.

“We’re continuing to look at ways to consolidate, ways to optimize, ways to be more efficient,” he said.
