The Witcher 3 is the biggest launch of the year in the UK

It looks like multiple delays were not such a bad idea after all for Polish game studio CD Projekt RED. The studio’s recently released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which had been pushed back nearly half a year, has easily topped every other game launch in the U.K. so far this year and is also performing exceptionally well elsewhere.

According to chart-trackThe Witcher 3 smashed Battlefield Hardline’s week 1 sales by 53 percent. A surprising 63 percent of the game’s sales came from PlayStation 4, but this data is likely significantly skewed, as chart-track does not have access to digital sales through services like Steam or CD Projekt’s own GOG.com.

The incredible launch isn’t just good news for The Witcher 3. It’s also good for its predecessor, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, which saw a 608 percent increase in sales. Again, this number is likely much higher if digital downloads were taken into account.

Almost perfect

While the game’s launch has been a huge financial and critical success, The Witcher 3 has not been without its issues, especially for people playing the game on AMD cards. The Witcher 3 has recently been at the center of some controversy after AMD accused Nvidia of sabotaging the game’s performance on AMD GPUs.

CD Projekt RED has stayed out of the two graphics card companies’ brawl, and the studio has been quickly turning out patches that have tackled some of the issues. The studio is still riding high on the goodwill it has built with fans thanks to the overall quality of the game and the tons of freebies it gives out in the form of DLC, artwork, soundtrack downloads, and so on.

Unfortunately, the most recent patch, which was released yesterday, added a few new problems at the same time that it fixed others. Most notably, many players have made complaints about the size of the loot window and issues with pop-in and other graphical errors.

But even with these problems, The Witcher 3 has been a big hit for CD Projekt RED, and it currently holds an impressive 93/100 rating on Metacritic and is already being called game of the year by some publications.
