Fallout 4, Dishonored 2, Doom and more shown off by Bethesda | #E32015
Bethesda held its first ever E3 press conference on Sunday, and the Maryland-based studio and publisher did not disappoint. In the span of roughly one hour, Bethesda showed off some of the biggest names in gaming, and they closed everything out by revealing that the eagerly awaited Fallout 4 would be released this year on November 10.
You can watch the full conference still on Twitch, but here is a quick rundown of everything that went on.
Doom
Bethesda owns several studios through its publishing arm, ZeniMax Media. One of those studios includes veteran game makers Id Software, whose games helped define the first-person shooter genre in the 1990s.
Now, Id is returning to those action-heavy FPS roots with a brand new Doom, set to release in the first half of 2016. The game features several classic shooter tropes like ammo pickups and locked doors that require keys (or severed hands), and don’t expect any regenerating health.
Aside from a new single-player campaign, Doom will have multiplayer with a heavy focus on movement thanks to double-jumps, jetpacks, and more.
“Doom multiplayer is fast-paced, arena-style combat in locations ranging from UAC facilities on Mars to the depths of Hell,” said Marty Stratton, Executive Producer at Id Software. “You’ll be challenged in exciting modes like domination, freeze tag, and clan arena to annihilate your enemies using your own personal blend of skill, fast vertical movement, awesome guns, and very unique powerups.”
The new Doom will include easy to use map building tools so players can create their own levels. It’s like Mario Maker, but with chainsaws and demons.
Battlecry
A new IP from a new studio, Battlecry is a third-person team-based action game that is already drawing comparisons to Team Fortress 2 and Overwatch. Whether or not that is a good thing remains to be seen, but it is clear the industry thinks MOBA-infused action games are going to be big next year.
Battlecry Studios showed a short trailer for the game that highlighted the different classes you can play as well as a small snippet of the combat. The developers also announced that beta signups were going live at the time of the conference, and players can register to participate through their website at battlecrythegame.com.
Dishonored 2
Another studio under the ZeniMax umbrella is French developer Arkane Studios, who showed up at Bethesda’s conference to announce Dishonored 2, a sequel to the 2012 stealth assassin game that was set in a steampunk fantasy world.
The new game takes place a few years after the original, and it will allow you to play as either Corvo, the protagonist of Dishonored, or as Emily Kaldwin, the empress’ daughter that was rescued in the first game.
So far Arkane has only offered a brief cinematic glimpse of Dishonored 2, but it appears the new game will take place in a different continent that is reminiscent of India under Victorian English rule. Expect lots of pith helmets.
Elder Scrolls Online
Bethesda’s MMO Elder Scrolls Online recently made the jump to consoles, and the studio showed off footage from the series during the conference.
The team also revealed a new competitive card game called Tamriel Legends, because Bethesda just really wants to be Blizzard Entertainment. The game shares more than a few similarities to Hearthstone, and Elder Scrolls Online has already proven that creating an Elder Scrolls-themed Blizzard game can be somewhat successful.
Fallout 4
The feature attraction that everyone had been waiting for, Bethesda finally revealed more details about Fallout 4, the latest game in a post-apocalyptic series that has been running since 1997. Bethesda revealed that Fallout 4 will be released November 10, 2015.
The new game appears to be very similar to Fallout 3 with a few major additions. The crafting system has been completely reimagined, giving players more freedom than ever when it comes to crafting their own unique weapons and armor, as well as the ability to custom-build their own settlement.
Game Director Todd Howard emphasized that the team designed Fallout 4 with multiple play styles in mind, making a seamless transition from first-person to third-person combat. The combat itself appears to be almost identical to Fallout 3, complete with VATS mode and companions.
Howard also announced a new free-to-play mobile title, a sim-like game called Fallout Shelter, which was released on the App Store immediately following the conference. The game allow players to act as overseers of their own vault, where they have to grow food, build weapons, and fight off raider attacks. The game is available for iOS now, with an Android version coming later.
