Datto extends data protection to new frontiers in massive update
With the enterprise technology conference season now in full swing, Datto Inc. is seizing the moment to join the fray. The backup and recovery powerhouse unleashed a barrage of new updates at its annual partner meeting this morning that extend the reach of its data protection capabilities to the new systems and environments where organizations store their information.
The centerpiece of the rollout is a homegrown router that Datto says has been specifically built to meet the requirements of service providers that make their living helping customers manage their on-premise infrastructure. That has historically involved dispatching technicians to the site after every major network outage, which is inconvenient to both parties.
Datto’s router promises to avoid that hassle with built-in troubleshooting functionality that allows for remote configuration and problem resolution, including failover to regular wireless connectivity when all else proves ineffective. That spars the provider’s employees a trip to the client site center while, even more importantly, saving the latter the wait.
For the majority of enterprises that depend on the stability of their network to do business, that translates into potentially massive savings from the avoided disruption to their operations, a benefit that Datto hopes to extend to backend as well with the new Linux agent introduced in conjunction. It’s a strategic addition that will enable its backup appliances to work with the fast-growing portion of servers in the data center running on the open-source operating system.
But that growth still pales compared to the public cloud, where Linux is already dominant. The company is stepping up its efforts on that front, too, in response with the addition of a new backup option for Office 365 based on the data protection service gained through its acquisition of Backupify Inc. last year. That joins an upgrade to its SIRIS line of business continuously appliances that will allow business workers to access the information kept inside without having to go through the operations team.
Like the new router, the software capabilities that Datto is debuting at its conference this morning are not aimed directly at the enterprise but rather for use by providers that repackage the functionality for the specific requirements of their customers. Accordingly, the company is also updating its partner portal as part of the launch with an activity feed that promises to provide centralized access to important notifications from end-users.
