Release date, impressive camera shots and the price of Microsoft’s new Lumia phones

Microsoft’s two new flagship Windows Phones may have been the subject of myriad leaks, but at least the leaks pretty much always turned out to be the truth. The most recent leak has established the release date of the two phones, the Lumia 950 and 950 XL, and that will be November 20th.

Windows Central has said that the Lumia 950 will be released by AT&T. The rationality behind the date is that Friday 13th is too soon before the shopping holiday frenzy – and not a great day if you’re superstitious. They added that November 20th might be too close to the holidays and so “hectic”. This was later confirmed by The Verge’s Tom Warren, who said that sources at Microsoft had told him Windows Central was correct.

It’s thought the contract price for the new Lumia 950 will be around $100, while off-contract the phone is said be around the $550 mark.

As for the 950 XL, a similar phone but with a faster processor and larger screen, it’s reported that AT&T will not be the carrier. Instead the 950 XL is likely to be sold unlocked via Microsoft Stores, it’s reported.  We might also expect the 950 XL to come with a promotional bundle, such as being couple with Microsoft’s Display Dock.

Lastly, we get to see what kind of a punch the Lumia 950 and 950 XL 20MP PureView camera packs. This is thanks to a Microsoft employee, Brandon LeBlanc, Senior Program Manager on the Windows Insider team, who took the camera out for a test drive – and the results are quite impressive. Panoramic shots, close-ups, all seem to have the clarity and definition of a professional camera. The definition in the close-up of what we expect is LeBlanc’s dog is pretty damned amazing for a phone camera.
