Google Maps’ new Driving Mode knows your destination before you do

Google’s latest update for Google Maps Android includes a new feature called Driving Mode that will predict your destination before you add it.

Android Police discovered the new feature on Tuesday, but Driving Mode was not working properly at that stage.

The new Google Maps’ feature is available now and will roll out to Android users by the end of this week. Unfortunately, at this stage, it will only be available in the U.S., United Arab Emirates, Great Britain, Ireland, Malaysia, New Zealand, and Singapore and is only available in English.

The new Driving Mode feature will use existing addresses like “work” and “home”, as well as recently searched addresses to predict where you are going. In addition, Driving Mode bases its predictions on your current location as well as the time of day to predict where you are likely to be driving. If, for example, you go to the gym at 6 am every morning, and still require Google Maps to get there, the new feature will offer the gym as your likely destination.

Of course, you do not have to only rely on the predictions offered by Driving Mode and you will still be able to input any address that you like, which will ultimately just help with future predictions.

If you are an Android user in one of the seven countries listed then you can access Driving Mode in two ways: you can either add a Google Maps driving shortcut to your home screen or tap the sidebar menu in Google Maps and select the option called ‘Start Driving.’

A Google spokesperson spoke about the new Driving Mode feature with VentureBeat, “Now with just one tap, you’ll know whether you should hit the road or put in some gym time to avoid the gridlock. With a simple shortcut on your home screen, you’ll head straight into the new driving mode so you’re sure to get where you’re going on the quickest route possible — without entering a destination. Get information like ETAs, traffic updates, nearby gas prices, and quickest routes to familiar places — like home, work, and recently searched destinations — all from your home screen.”

You can download an updated version of Google Maps in the Play Store now.
