Huawei P9, P9 Plus unveiled, heading for the U.S. Can they compete with Samsung, LG?

Huawei Consumer Business Group yesterday unveiled its new range of flagship Android smartphones, the Huawei P9 and P9 Plus, aimed squarely at taking on the Samsung Galaxy S7 and LG G5,  released earlier this year.

Both the 5.2-inch P9 and 5.5-inch P9 Plus come it at under 7mm thick and feature 2.5D curved glass surrounded by a slim 1.7mm bezel — all packaged in a full metal unibody.

Unlike its rivals, Huawei stuck to 1080p FHD screen resolution but did treat the P9 Plus to an AMOLED display. The P9 has a standard LCD panel.

Under the hood, the P9 and P9 Plus both feature a Kirin 955 SoC with an octa-core CPU combining four Cortex-A72 and four Cortex-A53 cores and a Mali-T880 MP4 GPU. The P9 is available in two flavors: a 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage version and a 4GB/64GB of storage version. The P9 Plus come in only a 4GB/64GB version. Both devices have a microSD slot for additional storage.

Dual-lens rear camera systems on smartphones are all the rage right now — the LG G5 sports a standard and wide-angle combination and Apple are rumored to include a dual-lens camera on the upcoming iPhone 7.

Huawei P9 dual cameraNot to be outdone, Huawei has partnered with Leica Camera AG to outfit the P9 and P9 Plus with two “Leica-approved” lenses and some help reengineering Huawei’s camera app.

The rear camera configurations consist of two 12MP lenses, one monochrome, and one color, combined with laser auto-focus, optical image stabilization, and a dual-tone LED flash. Huawei claims that the camera setup on the P9 and P9 Plus is “changing smartphone photography forever,” but we’ll have to wait and see actual image comparisons.

The P9’s camera setup does have a few interesting capabilities, though. The monochrome sensor has 300 percent better light capture and 50 percent more contrast and allows an image captured with it to be processed with the color sensor to yield improved colors in the final image.

Additionally, the P9 camera focusses uses laser, depth calculation, and contrast focus, automatically picking the focus mode that delivers the best image. Dual sensors also mean that images can be refocused post capture.

Those preferring a more traditional camera experience will be happy to know that the P9 can output images in RAW format and features manual camera controls, like ISO, exposure, and shutter speed control.

Available in a selection of six colors — Ceramic White, Titanium Grey, Mystic Silver, Haze Gold, Prestige Gold, and Rose Gold — the P9 and P9 Plus go on sale April 16 in the U.K., across Europe and the Middle East. Huawei also revealed that it will bring the P9 and P9 Plus to the U.S. later this year.
