New E Ink display offers 32,000 colors

The dream of decent quality color electronic paper is no longer that far away, with E Ink Holdings, Inc. announcing Tuesday it’s come up with the technology to deliver exactly that.

Called Advanced Color ePaper (ACeP), the new electronic ink offers a high quality, full-color reflective display with an electrophoretic display (EPD) that can produce full color at every pixel without the use of a color filter array (CFA).

According to a media release from the company, the ACeP achieves a full color gamut, including all eight primary colors, using only colored pigments, with the display itself utilizing a single layer of electrophoretic fluid, which is controlled using voltages compatible with commercial TFT backplanes; the richness of the colors is said to be achieved by having all the colored pigments in every picture element (pixel) rather than the side-by-side pixel colors achieved with a CFA, eliminating light attenuation.

In simpler terms, the color electronic ink uses basically the same technology as common black and white displays such as Amazon.com, LLC.’s Kindle and uses a single backplane, a group of electrical connectors in parallel with each other.

E Ink claims that the ACeP retains paperlike readability in various light conditions, one of the advantages monochrome electronic ink displays has over regular digital displays.

Catch

While the display can show an astonishing 32,000 colors, there is a catch: it won’t be coming to an e-book reader anytime soon.

According to Engadget, the company is positioning the new technology for display signs of up to 20 inches, and currently has some limitations in terms of it being able to be eventually used in something like an Amazon Kindle.

All that said, it’s an exciting breakthrough.

Electronic paper, or E-Ink is not only easier on the eyes than LCD screens, but in an environmentally friendly-obsessed age,E-Ink also uses far, far less power; can your iPad or Samsung Galaxy Tab go for a month without charging?

The new ACeP color offering will be on display at the SID Display Week in San Francisco until May 26.
