Gearing up for WWDC: Apple mobile development bootcamps for iOS (Part 2)

Welcome to Part 2 of the “Gearing up for WWDC” iOS mobile bootcamp list for developers who want to be on track for everything Apple intends to unveil at this year’s WWDC 2016. If you missed it, go ahead and read through the listings provided in Part 1.

Below you will find five more multi-week developer courses offered by various teaching organizations around the U.S. and Canada, as well as those who offer online courses.

Many courses last two months or more—learning to develop in on a new platform is not easy—but it does mean that after Apple announces new products and designs at WWDC newly minted developers can quickly find themselves with the tools necessary to make products for those devices, potentially by the time they go to market.

Who: The New York Code + Design Academy

Length: 8 weeks

Course: Students will begin the course by learning Swift, a powerful programming language, and from there, acquire the other important skills needed to design apps in today’s competitive market. Graduate ready to deploy your own fully functional apps to the app store!

Cost: $2,250

Schedule: June 13 – Aug. 8

The New York Code + Design Academy is running a multi-week developer introductory course to Swift and Xcode and iOS mobile apps. The curriculum behind the course is designed to provide the knowledge needed to teach developers to develop their own iOS mobile apps. It also includes object-oriented programming basics, app structures, control flow, collections and functions, sorting, interface building, networking and more.

Participants in this course will need to bring a MacOS laptop and have a membership in the Apple Developer Program ($99/year).

Several upcoming sections will be held at the NYCDA’s New York campus in 2016 starting June 13, August 15 and October 24.

Who: Lighthouse Labs

Length: 8 weeks

The Lighthouse Labs iOS Development Bootcamp takes place on two campuses in Canada, in Vancouver and Toronto, and has multiple start dates in 2016 for the 8-week course beginning June 27, September 5 and October 31.

Participants will become part of a full time immersive course with a seven to one mentor ratio designed to teach developers hands-on how to develop apps for iPhone, iPad and Apple TV from the ground up. Students will learn how to program in Objective-C and Swift, how to use Cocoa Frameworks, execute animations, work with storyboards and Auto Layout for UI design, and learn how to work with APIs, Parse and BaaS alternatives such as CoreData and Realm for data persistence.

Students will also learn how to use the iOS App Store in a hands-on manner as the class intends to have the students create a midterm project app and a final project app that can be submitted to the Apple App Store or show off to potential employers.

Who: Flatiron School

Course: Objective-C, Swift, Debugging, Xcode, Universal apps, app distribution, mobile design, SDKs, custom interfaces, GIT, test-driven developments, blogs & presentations

The enrollment dates for the June 6 classes have already passed but the next one is upcoming at September 26.

Participants will receive training in Objective-C, Swift and the entire iOS ecosystem. Students will be provided access to the campus computing resources 24/7 and have additional resources on the weekends such as alumni mentorship and lab reviews. The classes include training in Xcode, debugging techniques, mobile design, SDK and API use, custom interface design, mobile design, test-driven development, how to use Git and Github and finally how to submit an app to the App Store.

Who: Bloc

Length: 16/32 weeks

Course: Objective-C, Swift, iOS – In Bloc’s iOS Development Course, you’ll learn the skills required to create iOS apps. The Foundation section introduces developer tools such as Xcode, Git, GitHub, and the command line. You’ll spend several weeks learning Objective-C, the primary language used for iOS development. After exploring the newer language for iOS – Swift – you’ll build three iOS apps: a conversion calculator app, a web browser app, and an Instagram app.

Cost: $4,999 – with financing options

Schedule: June 20, 2016

Link: https://www.bloc.io/ios-bootcamp

Bloc provides part-time and full-time mentor-based teaching courses for iOS Fundamentals and App Development with classes starting soon. In order to make learning easy, Bloc’s instruction and courses take place entirely online and come with two pacing options a 16-week course at 25 hrs. per week and a 32-week course at 10 hrs. per week.

Participants will learn the skills to understand and use iOS developer tools such as Xcode, Git, GitHub, and the command line. The course will also introduce and teach Object-C, the iOS development language, and then give students a chance to explore Apple’s newest language Swift. Finally students will build apps: a conversion calculator app, a web browser app and an Instagram app.

In the second phase of the course, Bloc students will use what they learned in the previous phase to build their own production quality apps in Objective-C or Swift. The objective is to design a portfolio of apps to showcase newly developed talent. During this a mentor will assist with the development of the app and its finalization, allowing students to put what they learned into direct development action.
