Google Daydream View goes on sale Nov. 10: Where to buy & VR experiences to expect

At Google Inc.’s event last month the company launched its Daydream View virtual reality headset, which officially goes on sale next week, on Nov. 10.

The Daydream View, which costs just $79, will likely make it tempting for all users and not just VR fanatics. Microsoft Corp. has also set its sights on offering more affordable VR headsets. While not as cheap as the Daydream View, Microsoft announced last week at its Windows 10 event that it would offer VR headsets from several hardware manufacturers, including Asus, Dell, and Lenovo starting at $299.

Here’s a look at where you can purchase your Daydream View, as well as the various VR experiences, including movies and games, you will get to enjoy with the Daydream.

Daydream View requirements

At this stage, you will need to own the newly launched Google Pixel or Pixel XL smartphone to use the Daydream View. However, Google is expected to announce other Daydream-compatible smartphones in the coming months.

Price and availability

The Daydream View VR headset goes on sale on Nov. 10. You can preorder a Daydream View on the Google Store for $79 or you can pick one up at various retailers across the U.S., Canada, U.K., Germany and Australia from Nov. 10.

  • U.S.: Retailers are Verizon and Best Buy. Will retail for $79.
  • Canada: Retailers are Bell, Rogers, Telus and Best Buy. Will retail for CA$99
  • U.K.: Retailers are EE and Carphone Warehouse. Will retail for £69.
  • Germany: Retailer is Deutsche Telekom. Will retail for €69.

Currently, the Daydream View is only available in one color, Slate, but two additional colors Crimson and Snow, will be available at a later date. Included with the Daydream View is a plastic remote control that charges via USB-C. You can charge it using the included cable from your Pixel smartphone or buy an additional cable.

Daydream experiences

Daydream offers users a variety of VR experiences from movies to exploring outer space and the opportunity to immerse yourself in a range of games. Google will continue to add new apps and games to Daydream.

Here’s a look at the apps and games that will launch with the Daydream View when it goes on sale next week.

Movie, TV shows and videos

Daydream - Invasion

With the Daydream View and your Pixel smartphone, in addition to the entire YouTube video library,  you can also enjoy YouTube VR videos from top creators. You will also get to enjoy the full range of movies and TV shows from Google Play Movies.

Users will also be able to stream Hulu’s entire library of TV shows, movies and VR content. In addition, there will be exclusive availability of new VR content from Huffpo RYOT available on the Daydream. This includes a news program called “The Big Picture: News in Virtual Reality” and a VR comedy show called “Virtually Mike and Nora” starring Nora Kirkpatrick and Mike O’Brien.

Note: The Hulu VR app is only available in the U.S.

You will also be able to watch the award-winning VR animation, from Madagascar director and narrated by Ethan Hawke, called Invasion.

Explore the news and new places

The Daydream offers you the opportunity to explore new places across the globe and go into outer space, as well as see breaking news and analysis.

With Street View, you can travel across the globe and experience 150 tours across 70 countries or simply stay in your hometown and explore it from your Daydream. Alternatively become an urban explorer with the Guardian VR and explore the Victorian sewers and lost waterways under the streets of London. You can also go further afield and explore everything from the sun to the moons of Saturn all the way to Pluto with Star Chart VR.

With the Daydream and the Wall Street Journal VR you can experience news and analysis in a new way with interactive 360-degree videos and interactive market data visualization.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them offers users the opportunity to get immersed into this VR film experience with the ability to cast spells, solve puzzles and more.

Finally the New York Times VR will premiere three films in the Daydream app.

An immersive gaming experience

Daydream - games

The Daydream offers a variety of games to keep you entertained, from dealing with a runaway goat in Danger Goat, defending a town from demon invasion in Hunters Gate or become a baseball star in Home Run Derby.

Other Daydream games include Wonderglade, Gunjack 2: End of Shift, Mekorama and Need for Speed: No Limits VR.
