BIG DATA

Where are all the mid-market data tools? | #theCUBE

A mid-range cloud tool in a market of extremes may seem too good to be true, but one company may have achieved the right mix of cost and value. Talend’s blend of scalability, interoperability and cost has earned the respect of  Karim Bahai, senior data engineer at Direct Vet Marketing Inc. (Vets First Choice). He recently talked with Sam Kahane (@Sam_Kahane) of theCUBE*, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, during the Talend Beer and Big Data 2016 event. They spoke about Direct Vet Marketing’s use of Talend’s data integration tools to pull together the threads of its online pharmacy business for veterinarians, including data on vet practices, pharmacies and medications.

“We have all that data that we have to crunch through,” he said, acknowledging his company’s need for data integration software. Direct Vet Marketing was initially using a free open-source Extract, Transform and Load tool and considered graduating to the paid version, but “we felt [it] didn’t really provide enough benefits to move forward on.”

Bahai recalled the challenge of finding the right data tool for the company’s needs. “It seemed like there were free tools and … there were ridiculously expensive tools,” he said. “Talend fell in the middle, in a little bit of a sweet spot.”

For the price, Talend offers a good blend of scalability, options to increase speed through the addition of machines and a crucial third feature, according to Bahai. “The team tools are built in. So we have multiple people working on things, and we’re able to share work and collaborate within Talend,” Bahai said.
