WeTokU: Dead Simple Video Interview System

I’m always on the lookout for tools that will allow me to record video interviews with imagerelative ease for both me and the interviewee.  The market for software tools in this respect has come a long way since the days where Sean P. Aune and I started doing them over at Mashable.

Our process used to be opening up a Ustream window and creating connections to both Sean and I and then the interview subject while having a fourth (or sometimes fifth) person acting in a producer role by screen-capturing (and audio capturing) the session.

We then found that this process was far too convoluted for most people to understand, so Sean and I found that recording our audio streams via GrandCentral and our video streams locally was a better solution (or at least an easier solution), and allowed us more freedom in terms of post-production editing.

Since Sean and I “pioneered” the limits of remote vodcasts, folks like Leo Laporte have pioneered technologies like the “Skyposaurus” which allow them to mux in video from multiple remote sources.

image There are a number of new software tools that are allowing this to happen on even underpowered and non-dedicated machines, like the Skype-based Vodburner, but Michael Sean Wright and I today decided to try out a different service (since Vodburner is PC-only, and he’s on a Mac) called WoTokU.

Upsides: Dead simple, and you’ll likely have no problem using the service, nor will your interview subject (so long as they’re able to turn on and plug in their webcam).

Downsides: It’s a little low-resolution, and you can’t save your files off the system, only remote embed them. Also: it cuts off after 10 minutes.

You can watch the recorded conversation between Michael and I (we get into a bit of a Network Neutrality debate there at the end, and due to the time-limit, I had to cut him off Bill O’Reilly style (“here’s my long question – you have 9 seconds to respond!).
