Fun With iPhone and Social Media Monitoring

All of social media was abuzz today with news of the new iPhone. In fact, the new iPhone, iPhone 4, generated 30,000 mentions just today (data collected between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. PST).

Steve Jobs in his keynote announced several groundbreaking features and applications for the new iPhone. I measured the most salient features to see how they stacked up against each other, and this is what I got:

As you can see, FaceTime was by far the most popular topic, followed by discussion of the operating system iOs4 and the great new bi-directional camera with a flash (finally!)

Overall, of all people who expressed emotion about the new iPhone, most had positive things to say about the device:

To zero in on specific phrases, I tracked the most frequently occurring phrases associated with the iPhone 4.

As you can see, the main phrases that occurred were: video, FaceTime, AT&T’s fail during the keynote, WWDC keynote address, iOS4, iMovie. And as far as emotions towards it, people seem to think it’s "amazing". I will be tracking these numbers as they change throughout the next couple of days, and if any significant changes occur, will note it in a follow up post.
