World’s First DivX HD Certification Comes to Samsung Galaxy S Android Phone
High quality DivX HD format movies are coming to the Samsung Galaxy S mobile phone. This beautiful Android phone will be the first mobile capable of playing 720p resolution DivX HD movies on both the handset’s 4-inch screen and through HD capable devices.
From the company statement,
To enjoy DivX video on the Galaxy S, consumers can load their video libraries of both standard definition and HD 720p movies in the DivX format on the internal and external memory (expandable to 32GB) and then watch their collections anywhere they choose. In addition, the Galaxy S can connect directly to other DivX Certified devices, such as HDTVs, turning it into a powerful mobile set-top box in the living room. The Galaxy S will also support the secure playback of major Hollywood titles in the DivX format from leading studios.
“The Galaxy S has exploded in popularity, and we are very excited to join Samsung in promoting its new DivX HD capabilities,” said Kevin Hell, Chief Executive Officer, DivX, Inc. “We’re pleased that Samsung recognizes the importance of the DivX brand in providing their consumers with a seamless, high-quality entertainment experience.”
Samsung’s offering of the Galaxy S and its DivX HD capability also places Android in a better position against current mobile media giant Apple. They already have HD capability—such as HD streaming from iTunes—on the iPhone and iPad. Android phones will see a lot of competition in the entertainment market and are well situated to deliver with this sort of license.
One of the best components of this license isn’t just playing HD quality video on the handset, but also the ability for the video to be exported to HD capable screens. Certainly, using an Android device to power a television like a set-to-box could enable the at-home-theater cozy atmosphere, but at the same time it will also allow the consumer to just disconnect and take the movie on the go. Or vice-versa: watch a daily show on the bus or train home, then, once indoors, onto the big screen it goes.
In other HD news for Android, Gameloft has already headed in this direction with several of its titles.
