Christmas is coming, and like every year, people are going to buy a lot of dull, expensive AAA games for their favorite console. I would like to share with you some different games I think you should play. As these are independent games, the cost of all of them combined is less than the latest Call of Duty.
Think "Super Mario Bros." on steroids. You play as Meat Boy, a tiny blob of meat, who will fearlessly jump between gaps, spikes, chainsaws and lasers, to rescue Bandage Girl, your damsel in distress who was kidnapped by the evil Dr. Fetus! The game is really charming, with cute graphics, funny cut-scenes, lots of homages to older video games, and 350 levels.
This is another retro-style platformer. VVVVVV is a puzzle game where you press a button to flip gravity and dodge obstacles. Though the game can be difficult, it features really creative levels. The soundtrack is a real treat, and the puzzles are truly mind bending.
An art game if there ever was one. You play a nameless boy, exploring dark woods, searching for a girl. The visuals are truly stunning, and the game feels much like a weird dream. The gameplay involves a variety of physics based puzzles. Simlar to Ico, Shadow of the Colossus or Another World, there is this strange feeling of loneliness and alienation throughout the game.
This is a hardcore Japanese shoot them up. The whole point of the game is to survive huge barrages of bullets (the name of the genre, Danmaku, means "bullet curtain" in Japanese), by navigating through a maze of shots an enemies. Few games are as fast paced, punishing and rewarding.
A real survival horror game. You play in the first person, attempting to escape monsters, without any weapon to protect yourself. The only escape is to hide, or to solve physics puzzles until the monsters grow tired of chasing you. Your health bar is a measure of your sanity, which can lead to hallucinations. Most survival horror games create thrill; this one brings fear.
