HP Champions webOS, Ditches Microsoft’s MediaSmart Server line

Hewlett-Packard will officially remove Microsoft’s MediaSmart Server line, including, Windows Home Server codenamed ‘Vail’ from its support lineup, as it will stop selling it as of the end of 2010.It’s a big move for HP, but one geared towards its own interests.  The shift is in favor of its own webOS.

“HP has ditched Microsoft’s Windows Home Server operating system, codenamed ‘Vail’, just days after the software giant killed a popular feature in the product… Drive Extender [the feature discussed] supports multiple internal and external hard drives in the home server edition of Windows, and Microsoft’s decision to axe the feature led to complaints aplenty from customers.”

Microsoft denied any connection between Windows Home Server’s feature removal and HP’s dismissal of the MediaSmart Server line, and so did HP, in turn claiming it did so because the company is “shifting additional resources to focus on webOS initiatives”. webOS, developed by Palm which was acquired by HP may be the company’s opportunity to really break into the mobile market,  demonstrating an enhanced JavaScript framework Enyo for the mobile OS.

In addition to mobile, HP is also targeting the software securities industry with the recent launch of ALM 11, featuring an enhanced and more automated architecture designed to optimize reliable and secure delivery of applications and services.
