Dolphin Browser Gets $10M to Innovate the Mobile Web

MoboTap, the mobile technology developer behind the Dolphin Browser, has secured $10 million in Series A funding, led by Sequoia Capital, with Matrix Partners also joining the power team.  MoboTap’s Dolphin browser was launched on the Android platform in March 2010, and is Sequoia Capital’s first mobile browser investment.  MoboTap will use the new funds for rapid product development for Dolphin and expansion into new market segments.

Dolphin Browser HD is an intelligent mobile web browser that allows you to interact and engage with the web through your mobile device an easy and intuitive way.

“Dolphin is the most powerful and engaging way to browse and touch the internet available today,” said Yongzhi Yang, MoboTap’s CEO in a released statement.  “In creating Dolphin, we have made it possible to open any websites with just a touch of your finger tip. We believe in the future of mobile web and we want to bring the best mobile browsing experience to the world.”

The biggest selling point for Dolphin is that it lets you customize your mobile browser, like the way you would customize the desktop version of Firefox or Chrome using extensions. At this point there are over 50 Dolphin add-ons available, including Last.fm and LastPass. Dolphin also supports gestures.  And there’s a nifty ‘Webzine’ format that cleans up the pages you’re viewing. Dolphin uses the ‘Chrome Lite’ browser that’s baked into Android as its rendering engine.  It focuses exclusively on the UI and user experience.

Moreover, the company says that it will be using the new funding for three things: it will help the team to grow, which already numbers nearly 100 between offices in San Francisco and Beijing. MoboTap is also going to focus on building out new partnerships, which means we can probably expect it to come pre-installed on some handsets in the future. And, finally, it’s going to launch on other platforms, like iPhone app, extending its mobile experience with the hopes of creating standards around the still new mobile browser industry.
