

Business software maker SAP is taking a victory lap now that its organic license growth rate outpaced long time competitor Oracle for the first time in seven quarters, reports Matrix Research’s Rajeev Bahl. The company reported 35 percent growth throughout each of its three core markets: North America, Europe and Asia Pacific.
SAP Co-CEO Jim Snabe, who had his contract extended shortly after the company reported its results, told Bloomberg’s Linzie Janish his take on the company’s growth in an interview.
“We’re actually more than just talking about more than a market share shift here; we think this is a fundamental shift in the market dynamics, where companies are investing more in the software part and less in commodity infrastructure. We deliberately chose a strategy of driving innovation… Q2 speaks for itself.”
SAP’s “innovation strategy” is a combination of several new products, including its in-memory HANA analytics offering as well as a number of cloud and mobile initiatives. Snabe noted that SAP set a target to generate 100 million Euros this year from what is “fastest growing pipeline in the company’s history,” however the company will need more than that to reach the $29.05 billion revenue mark by 2015, as promised to investors. Revenue totaled 12.5 billion in the fiscal year 2010.
Overall, Bahl at Matrix Research estimates that SAP’s organic application growth was 2 percent higher than Oracle’s at 18 percent. He credits this to SAP’s successful shift to on-demand services, in which analytics and HANA play a very big role. The latest update from here is that the software maker entered a three and a half year-long agreement with Google to integrate Google Maps and Earth with the offering.
As a part of the deal SAP has access to 12 new APIs, which customers will be able to use in order to address more specific needs: a bank, for example, would be able to gain insight on housing markets by layering data and loan-holders’ locations.
